Current Context: The Union Cabinet has approved the National Mission on Edible Oils – Oilseeds (NMEO-Oilseeds) for the period 2024-25 to 2030-31. This mission aims to boost domestic oilseed production and achieve self-reliance in edible oils.

  • Key highlights include:
    • Financial Outlay: ₹10,103 crore.
    • Production Goals: Increase primary oilseed production from 39 million tonnes (2022-23) to 69.7 million tonnes by 2030-31.
    • Focus Crops: Rapeseed-Mustard, Groundnut, Soybean, Sunflower, and Sesamum.
    • Technological Integration: Use of genome editing and high-yielding seed varieties.
    • Infrastructure Development: Establishment of 65 new seed hubs and 50 seed storage units.
    • Value Chain Clusters: Development of over 600 clusters across 347 districts.
  • This initiative is part of the broader goal of achieving Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) in edible oils.
