Current Context: On 17 September 2025, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) released the Global Innovation Index (GII) 2025.
India Rises to 38th in Global Innovation Index 2025
  • India rose to 38th place among 139 economies, improving from 39th in 2024 and 48th in 2020.
  • It retained the #1 position in Central & Southern Asia and among lower‑middle‑income economies.
  • India’s strengths include ICT services exports, unicorn/startup ecosystem, venture capital, and knowledge & technology outputs (rank 22).
  • Weaknesses remain in business sophistication (64), infrastructure (61), and institutions (58).
  • Globally, Switzerland, Sweden, and the USA secured the top three spots, while China entered the Top 10 for the first time at #10.
  • India also ranked 4th worldwide in innovation clusters, with Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Chennai featuring in the Top 100.
