• On July 30, 2026, Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia announced India’s target of reaching 100 crore, or one billion, 5G users by 2030. India had already connected nearly 50 crore users through more than five lakh 5G towers. The initiative aims to expand high-speed connectivity, strengthen domestic telecom manufacturing and support digital payments, online education, telemedicine, smart manufacturing and other emerging technologies.
• On July 29, 2026, the government announced that the Electronics Development Fund had invested about ₹258 crore through eight daughter funds, mobilising over ₹1,335 crore for 128 startups and companies. Implemented by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, the fund supports electronics, semiconductor design, IT and digital manufacturing. Karnataka emerged as the leading beneficiary, receiving nearly 64% of total investments across 90 supported companies.

• In July 2026, China reportedly expanded its high-altitude drone research and development capabilities in Tibet. Index and Ranking: 

• On June 2, 2026, the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation announced plans to gradually replace the Wholesale Price Index with a Producer Price Index. The proposed index will measure changes in output, input and service-sector prices from the producer’s perspective. It is expected to provide more accurate inflation data and improve the calculation of real GDP through better price deflation.
• On July 30, 2026, government data showed that Visakhapatnam Port handled 50.87% of India’s marine exports during 2025. The port emerged as the country’s leading gateway for seafood exports. MoUs: 

• On July 28, 2026, India and Nepal jointly inaugurated the restored Shree Gusthal Mahavihar and the Agam of Prathamshree Mahavihar in Lalitpur, Nepal. The restoration was supported through an Indian government grant of approximately NPR 120 million. The project formed part of India’s post-earthquake reconstruction assistance and aimed to preserve Nepal’s cultural and religious heritage.

Appointments:

Obituaries: 

• On July 27, 2026, retired Brigadier Basant Kumar Ponwar passed away at the age of 77 in Mhow, Madhya Pradesh. A veteran of the 1971 India-Pakistan War, he founded the Counter Terrorism and Jungle Warfare College in Kanker, Chhattisgarh. He was widely known for developing specialised jungle-warfare training methods for security forces fighting Maoist insurgency.
