Cabinet Approves Pradhan Mantri Surya Sarovar Yojana

Current Context: On 31 July 2026, the Union Cabinet approved the Pradhan Mantri Surya Sarovar Yojana (PM-SSY) with an outlay of ₹5,070 crore.

  • The scheme aims to develop 5,000 MW of Floating Solar Photovoltaic projects on reservoirs, ponds and other suitable water bodies.
  • The projects will include energy-storage systems with a minimum capacity of two hours, equivalent to 10,000 MWh.
  • Projects will be approved from 2026–27 to 2030–31, while financial assistance may continue until 2032–33.
  • Eligible projects will receive Central Financial Assistance of ₹1 crore per MW after successful commissioning.
  • Up to ₹50 lakh per project will also be provided for feasibility studies and environmental assessments.
  • The scheme will reduce land requirements, improve grid reliability and utilise existing reservoirs and industrial ponds.
  • It is expected to reduce nearly 10 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually and create around 16,000–17,000 jobs.
