  • On 18 August 2026, a 56-km gauge-converted Kailaras–Sabalgarh–Birpur railway section in Madhya Pradesh was inaugurated, and the Gwalior–Kailaras MEMU service was extended to Birpur. The project is part of the Gwalior–Sheopur corridor and improves direct rail connectivity among Gwalior, Sabalgarh, Vijaypur and Birpur in the Gwalior-Chambal region.
  • On 18 August 2026, Maharashtra declared snakebite a notifiable disease, making reporting of suspected, probable and confirmed cases and deaths compulsory for hospitals, medical colleges and healthcare practitioners. The move will strengthen surveillance, track anti-snake venom use and improve public-health response, particularly in rural and tribal areas where snakebite mortality remains significant.
  • On 19 August 2026, Tamil Nadu announced 365 days of paid maternity leave for women State Government employees for a third child, replacing the earlier 12-week provision. The change brings maternity leave for the third child on par with the first two deliveries and is significant amid Tamil Nadu's low fertility rate and ageing demographic profile.
  • On 19 August 2026, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved four railway multi-tracking projects costing about ₹9,450 crore. The projects will add around 410 km of track across West Bengal, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu and improve freight and passenger capacity while serving about 6,448 villages.
  • On 18 August 2026, West Bengal's first Kaushal Mahotsav was held at Balurghat in Dakshin Dinajpur. It was organised by the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship with the West Bengal Government and NSDC. More than 7,500 interviews were conducted, connecting local youth with employers and employment opportunities.
  • On 18 August 2026, the Government of India approved an Incentive Scheme for Promotion of Domestic PNG Connections, effective from 1 September 2026. The scheme encourages City Gas Distribution companies to activate unbilled connections and expand household piped-natural-gas networks, promoting cleaner, safer and more affordable cooking fuel.
  • On 13 August 2026, the Parichha Weir in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, was recognised by the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage as a World Heritage Irrigation Structure. Built on the Betwa River and commissioned in 1886, the 140-year-old structure remains important to the Betwa Canal irrigation system serving Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.
International;
  • On 18 August 2026, the United States imposed sanctions on ICC President Tomoko Akane of Japan and Senior Trial Lawyer Abdoulaye Seye of Senegal. Announced by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the measures freeze assets under US jurisdiction and restrict access to the US financial system. The action is part of Washington's continuing dispute with the International Criminal Court.
  • On 18 August 2026, BRICS environment ministers adopted a joint statement in New Delhi opposing the European Union's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). BRICS members described such unilateral carbon-linked trade measures as discriminatory and protectionist and called for greater climate finance for developing economies, including higher adaptation funding.
  • On 13 August 2026, Russian President Vladimir Putin visited Iturup, one of the disputed southern Kuril Islands claimed by Japan as part of its Northern Territories. It was Putin's first personal visit to the Kuril archipelago. Japan protested the visit. The decades-old territorial dispute has prevented Russia and Japan from signing a formal World War II peace treaty.

  • On 2 July 2026, J&K Bank signed corporate agency agreements with HDFC Life Insurance and SBI Life Insurance to distribute their insurance products through the bank's branch network. The arrangement expands customer access to protection, savings, retirement and other life-insurance products while supporting the broader Insurance for All by 2047 objective.
  • On 18 August 2026, Razorpay launched Vulcan, described as India's first transformer-based AI foundation model specifically built for payments. Developed using NVIDIA and AWS technology, it was trained on data from about four billion transactions. Vulcan is designed to improve payment success rates, fraud detection, risk assessment and checkout personalisation. Early deployments reportedly improved payment success by 8–10%.
Economy:
  • On 18 August 2026, the Competition Commission of India approved Tata Steel's acquisition of an additional 23% stake in TM International Logistics Ltd. Tata Steel will acquire the stake from IQ Martrade Holding und Management GmbH for about ₹335 crore. TM International Logistics provides port operations, freight forwarding and railway cargo-related logistics services.
  • On 13 August 2026, Ministry of Commerce and Industry data showed India's total merchandise and services exports rising 13.31% year-on-year to USD 80.14 billion in July 2026. Imports rose 15.83% to USD 95.16 billion, leaving a trade deficit of about USD 15.03 billion. Merchandise exports alone increased 19.63% to USD 44.24 billion.
  • On 18 August 2026, the NSO's PLFS Monthly Bulletin for July 2026 showed India's unemployment rate for persons aged 15 years and above falling to 5.1%, from 5.5% in June. Labour-force participation and worker-population indicators also improved, with increased female participation contributing to the better labour-market reading.
  • On 18 August 2026, MeitY approved 31 proposals involving investments of ₹7,877 crore under the Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS). The projects span 10 States and are expected to create around 10,000 jobs and generate production worth approximately ₹82,243 crore, strengthening India's domestic electronics-component supply chain and reducing import dependence.

  • On 19 August 2026, Chinese private space company LandSpace launched its Zhuque-3 Y2 rocket and successfully vertically landed its first-stage booster. The mission placed the Honghu-3 commercial internet satellite into orbit. Zhuque-3 uses liquid oxygen and methane and is designed for reuse. The achievement marked China's first land recovery of an orbital-class rocket booster.
  • Reported on 19 August 2026, a fog-harvesting system on Mount Boutmezguida in southwestern Morocco is using mesh-based CloudFisher technology to capture moisture from Atlantic fog and convert it into usable water. The system supplies piped water to communities in the Aït Baamrane region without requiring electricity, demonstrating a climate-adaptation solution for arid and water-scarce areas.

  • On 7 August 2026, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Health and Family Welfare, chaired by Prof. Ram Gopal Yadav, presented its 176th Report on affordability and accessibility of healthcare. Among its recommendations was restricting the gap between the landing price and MRP of medicines and medical devices to around 20%, along with tighter controls on mark-ups, standardisation of treatment costs and improved price transparency.

  • On 17 August 2026, India hosted the 8th BRICS Youth Energy Summit virtually under its 2026 BRICS Chairship. More than 100 participants from BRICS nations took part. Obituaries:
  • On 18 August 2026, William F. Bill Rasmussen, co-founder of ESPN, died at the age of 93 at his home in Florida due to the effects of Parkinson's disease. Rasmussen and his son Scott developed the idea for a round-the-clock sports television network, leading to ESPN's launch on 7 September 1979. He is regarded as a pioneer who fundamentally changed sports broadcasting by demonstrating that a dedicated 24-hour sports network could succeed.
