National:

  • President Droupadi Murmu cleared the establishment of a High Court Bench in Ladakh on 27 August 2026 by promulgating the Union Territory of Ladakh (Sitting of the Bench of the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh in Ladakh) Regulation, 2026. The measure allows judges of the common High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh to hold sittings in Ladakh, improving access to higher judicial remedies for residents of the Union Territory.
  • India introduced its first uniform national minimum standards for mortuaries and post-mortem facilities on 30 August 2026. Finalised by the National Council for Clinical Establishments under the Directorate General of Health Services, the standards cover cold storage, body identification, staffing and autopsy facilities. Mortuaries cannot be located in basements or near hospital waste-disposal areas, while cold-storage units must generally maintain temperatures between 4°C and 8°C. 
  • The Department of Consumer Affairs notified the Legal Metrology (Indian Standard Time) Rules, 2026 on 27 August 2026, establishing Indian Standard Time as the common time reference for legal, administrative, commercial and other official purposes across India. The rules will come into force 180 days after notification, giving government departments, businesses and institutions time to align their digital and operational systems with the national time standard. 
  • The e-Shram portal remained the national database for unorganised workers as updated on 30 August 2026, covering home-based workers, self-employed people and wage workers outside EPFO, ESIC and government-funded NPS. Workers aged 16 years or above can register using Aadhaar and an Aadhaar-linked mobile number. The portal helps governments identify beneficiaries and deliver social-security and welfare schemes to migrant, gig, construction and other unorganised workers. 
  • India’s progress towards malaria elimination was reviewed by the Union Health Ministry on 28 August 2026, with data showing that malaria cases and deaths declined by nearly 80% between 2015 and 2025. The number of high-burden districts fell from 155 to 33, while 160 districts reported zero indigenous cases during 2022-2025. India aims to eliminate malaria by 2030 through surveillance and area-specific interventions. 
  • The Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances was selected for the special Rajbhasha Utkrishtta Sammaan 2025-26 on 27 August 2026 by the Department of Official Language, Ministry of Home Affairs. The honour recognises DARPG’s sustained performance in implementing the Official Language. The award is scheduled to be presented during the Hindi Diwas Sammelan at Navi Mumbai on 14 September 2026.
  • The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India proposed front-of-pack warning labels on 28 August 2026 for packaged foods and beverages containing excessive sugar, salt or saturated fat. The proposed system uses prominent red hexagonal warnings such as High Sugar, High Salt and High Fat. The measure is intended to make nutritional risks easier for consumers to understand and address India’s growing burden of obesity and diet-related diseases. 

International:

  • US President Donald Trump announced an oil agreement with Venezuela on 28 August 2026 under which the United States would gain majority control over more than 65 billion barrels of Venezuelan oil reserves through a public-private arrangement. Trump said the agreement could more than double accessible US oil reserves and attract around $100 billion in private investment, although analysts warned that Venezuela’s ageing infrastructure means major production increases could take years. 
  • India and China reached an eight-point consensus on their boundary issue during the 25th Special Representatives talks held in Beijing on 25 August 2026. National Security Adviser Ajit Doval represented India, while Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi represented China. The two sides agreed to maintain peace along the border, continue negotiations for a mutually acceptable settlement and strengthen communication and border-management mechanisms. 
  • China removed former PLA Western Theatre Commander General Zhao Zongqi from the CPPCC on 26 August 2026. He was removed from the Standing Committee of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, lost CPPCC membership and ceased to be Vice-Chairman of its Committee on Ethnic and Religious Affairs. Zhao commanded China’s Western Theatre during the 2017 Doklam standoff and 2020 Galwan confrontation.
  • India and Uzbekistan upgraded their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership on 30 August 2026 during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Tashkent and his talks with President Shavkat Mirziyoyev. The two countries set a target of increasing bilateral trade to US$5 billion by 2030 and agreed to deepen cooperation in trade, investment, critical minerals, connectivity, technology, energy and other strategic sectors. 
  • India emerged as an important petrol supplier to Russia during July-August 2026, with the development being reported on 30 August 2026. Russia, despite being a major crude-oil producer, faced domestic petrol shortages after attacks disrupted refinery operations. India buys Russian crude, refines it into petroleum products and has subsequently supplied petrol back to Russia, highlighting the difference between crude-production capacity and refining capacity. 
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi received Uzbekistan’s Oliy Darajali Do‘stlik Order on 30 August 2026 from President Shavkat Mirziyoyev during his visit to Tashkent. The Order of Highest Friendship is Uzbekistan’s highest honour for foreign leaders and recognised Modi’s contribution to strengthening bilateral friendship. Modi dedicated the honour to India’s 1.4 billion people and described it as a symbol of the longstanding India-Uzbekistan relationship. 
  • China and Bangladesh had agreed to explore a 2+2 dialogue mechanism covering diplomacy and defence in their joint communiqué issued on 26 June 2026, and preparations for the mechanism were subsequently reported in August 2026. The proposed dialogue would bring together officials dealing with foreign affairs and defence, creating a structured platform for strategic discussions between Beijing and Dhaka alongside their existing political and economic cooperation. 
  • A catastrophic glacier and rock collapse near the Nepal-Tibet border on 26 August 2026 triggered an enormous ice-rock avalanche and flash flood. Satellite analysis indicated that part of a glacier at around 5,200 metres collapsed roughly 1,200 metres into the valley, generating debris flows through the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river systems. Scientists are examining the role of unusually warm conditions, snowmelt and long-term glacier instability. 

Economy:

  • Delhi was reported on 29 August 2026 as having the highest own-revenue share among comparable states and Union Territories, at 93.2% of total revenue receipts in the FY2024-25 Budget Estimates. Haryana ranked second at 80.4%, followed by Telangana at 78.4%, Karnataka at 77.3% and Tamil Nadu at 75.5%. The calculation uses own tax and non-tax revenue and is based on RBI statistical data. 

Sports:

  • Hockey India announced a ₹50 lakh cash reward for the Indian Women’s Hockey Team on 28 August 2026 after its historic fifth-place finish at the FIH Hockey Women’s World Cup Belgium-Netherlands 2026. India secured fifth place by defeating Germany 3-1 at Amstelveen on 27 August. Captain Salima Tete’s team recorded India’s best Women’s World Cup finish since the fourth-place result in 1974. 
  • IIT Madras launched a new competitive sport called Phiball on 28 August 2026 at its Chennai campus ahead of National Sports Day. Phiball features three teams competing simultaneously on a circular court with three baskets. Each team attacks two baskets while defending its own. The sport combines elements of basketball and netball and is designed to emphasise speed, rapid decision-making, teamwork and constantly changing tactical situations. 
  • The Indian men’s hockey team finished eighth at the FIH Hockey World Cup on 29 August 2026 after losing the seventh-place playoff against Belgium at the Belfius Hockey Arena in Wavre, Belgium. The match ended 3-3 in regulation time before Belgium won the shootout 4-3. Harmanpreet Singh scored twice for India, including a late equaliser, while Abhishek scored India’s other goal. 
  • The 20th Asian Games are scheduled from 19 September to 4 October 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, with 43 sports and athletes from 45 Asian countries and regions. Unlike the Olympic Games, which bring together competitors globally under the IOC, the Asian Games are a continental multi-sport event under the Olympic Council of Asia. Aichi-Nagoya 2026 uses the concept Imagine One Asia and is Japan’s third time hosting the Asian Games. 

Science and Technology:

  • Gujarat launched India’s first state-level Sports Genomics Programme on 28 August 2026 to combine genomics, sports science, physiology and nutrition in athlete development. Led by the Gujarat Biotechnology Research Centre, the programme will create scientific profiles of athletes to support talent identification, personalised training, performance enhancement and injury prevention. The initiative is also significant as Gujarat prepares for major international sporting events, including the 2030 Commonwealth Games
  • NASA successfully launched the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope on 30 August 2026 aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy from Launch Complex 39A at Kennedy Space Center, Florida. Roman will travel around one million miles towards the Sun-Earth L2 region. Its wide-field infrared surveys will study dark matter, dark energy, exoplanets, black holes and billions of galaxies, complementing the Hubble and James Webb space telescopes. 
  • ISRO is scheduled to launch the EOS-05 Earth-observation satellite on 4 September 2026 using the GSLV-F17 from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota. EOS-05, also known as GISAT-1A, is intended to provide Earth-imaging capabilities from geosynchronous orbit. The mission is expected to strengthen India’s ability to undertake frequent monitoring for applications such as disaster management, agriculture, environmental observation and strategic Earth surveillance.
  • Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan launched Gnani Artha on 28 August 2026 at Uprashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi. Developed by Gnani AI, the sovereign AI stack combines Evon 3.3, a large language model, with Plexus, a platform connecting AI intelligence with institutional and enterprise workflows. The initiative aims to strengthen indigenous AI capability, Indian-language technologies, affordable AI deployment and greater domestic control over sensitive data. 
  • Scientists reported the discovery of Gangaichthys indonepalicus on 21 August 2026, a new genus and species of subterranean fish found in borewells in Bihar’s Indo-Gangetic Plain near the India-Nepal border. It is the first known subterranean fish from the alluvial aquifers of the Gangetic Basin. The roughly four-centimetre fish has reduced eyes and lacks body pigmentation, adaptations associated with life in permanently dark underground aquifers. 

Defence:

  • Taiwan’s parliament approved a NT$240 billion six-year military drone programme on 27 August 2026 after rejecting the government’s separate NT$210 billion proposal. The alternative framework permits spending of around NT$40 billion annually on military drones and unmanned systems. Taiwan wants to strengthen asymmetric warfare capabilities, expand domestic drone manufacturing and reduce dependence on Chinese components amid increasing security pressure from Beijing. 
  • India was reported on 29 August 2026 to have secured Dialogue Partner status in the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP), the sixth-generation combat-air project led by the United Kingdom, Japan and Italy. GCAP, also associated with the Tempest programme, aims to develop a next-generation fighter incorporating stealth, advanced sensors, networking and other futuristic technologies. Dialogue Partner status allows India to engage in discussions without making it a full co-development member. 
  • The Indian Coast Guard decommissioned ICGS Meera Behn at Okha on 22 August 2026 and ICGS Subhadra Kumari Chauhan at Mumbai on 27 August 2026. Both Fast Patrol Vessels had served for many years in maritime surveillance, coastal security and protection of India’s maritime interests. Their decommissioning ceremonies included the final lowering of the Coast Guard ensign and formally marked the end of their operational service. 
  • China was reported to have tested a stealth-coated variant of the YJ-18A anti-ship cruise missile on 26 August 2026. The missile carried a distinctive black radar-absorbing coating that experts believe could reduce radar reflections and improve visual camouflage over dark sea surfaces. The YJ-18A is a ship-launched anti-ship weapon that cruises initially at subsonic speed before accelerating during its terminal attack phase.

Committees:

  • The Central Government established the Mediation Council of India on 27 August 2026 through a notification issued by the Department of Legal Affairs, Ministry of Law and Justice. Created under Section 31 of the Mediation Act, 2023, the Council will have its head office in Delhi. It forms part of India’s institutional framework for promoting mediation and strengthening mechanisms for resolving disputes outside conventional court proceedings. 

Summits and Conferences:

  • Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan were scheduled to hold the first ministerial meeting under their new joint defence arrangement in Istanbul on 31 August 2026. Foreign and defence ministers and military chiefs were expected to discuss collective deterrence, military interoperability, defence capabilities and cooperation in defence technology and production. The meeting follows their new defence framework amid heightened security tensions in the Middle East. 
  • The 10th Taiwan-India Industrial Collaboration Summit was held in Bengaluru during August 2026, jointly organised by FICCI and Taiwan’s Chinese National Federation of Industries (CNFI). The event brought together more than 200 representatives and included sub-forums on electronics manufacturing, green and smart technologies, and smart automotive components. Six MoUs were announced in areas including surveillance, digital audio-video, networking and resource recycling. The available report does not specify the exact event day.

  • Banaras Hindu University signed two MoUs with the Confederation of Indian Industry on 27 August 2026 in Varanasi. The first makes Bharat Kala Bhawan a key partner for the Banaras Biennale 2026, scheduled from 27 November to 31 December with the theme KASHI/LIGHT – City as Sensorium. The second establishes a CII Education to Employment & Enterprise Career Lounge offering career counselling, training, internships, placement support and entrepreneurship mentoring. 
  • The Department of Telecommunications and C-DOT signed a five-year agreement on 27 August 2026 to establish an End-to-End Optical Network Test Bed at C-DOT’s New Delhi campus. Funded by DoT, the facility will allow Indian startups and companies to test and validate indigenous optical-core, access and quantum-security technologies under realistic conditions. It aims to bridge the gap between laboratory innovation and commercial deployment while supporting skill development.
  • The Central Industrial Security Force and Drone Federation of India signed an MoU on 28 August 2026 at CISF Headquarters in New Delhi to strengthen protection of critical infrastructure from rogue drones. The agreement covers counter-drone training, technology assessment, applied research, standard operating procedures and operational deployment. CISF’s training facility at Behror is also expected to develop specialised capabilities for drone and counter-drone systems. 

Appointments:

  • Crown Prince Haakon Magnus became Norway’s new monarch, King Haakon VIII, on 28 August 2026 immediately following the death of his father, King Harald V. Under Norway’s constitutional monarchy, succession to the throne was automatic. Haakon’s wife Mette-Marit became Queen, while their daughter Ingrid Alexandra became Crown Princess and heir apparent. The new king retained the traditional royal motto, All for Norway
  • TVS Motor Company announced the appointment of Peyman Kargar as Director and Chief Executive Officer on 28 August 2026, effective from 27 January 2027. He will succeed K. N. Radhakrishnan, who will continue as CEO until the transition and later serve temporarily as a non-executive director. Kargar currently leads TVS Motor’s international business and has more than three decades of global automotive experience.

  • National Small Industry Day was observed in India on 30 August 2026 to recognise the role of small industries and MSMEs in employment generation, entrepreneurship, manufacturing, exports and regional development. The observance highlights the contribution of small enterprises to India’s economy and encourages policy support, easier access to finance, technology adoption and market opportunities. No authoritative source identified a specific official theme for the 2026 observance.
  • The International Day Against Nuclear Tests was observed on 29 August 2026 to raise awareness about the harmful effects of nuclear-test explosions and promote the goal of a nuclear-weapon-free world. The UN General Assembly established the observance through Resolution 64/35 in 2009, and it was first observed in 2010. Obituaries:

  • Norway’s King Harald V passed away on 28 August 2026 at the age of 89 after being hospitalised with a bacterial infection. He had been Norway’s monarch since 1991 and was known for modernising the constitutional monarchy, promoting tolerance and maintaining strong public support. Harald was also a keen sailor who represented Norway at multiple Olympic Games. Following his death, his son automatically succeeded him as King Haakon VIII
  • King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV of Uganda’s Tooro Kingdom passed away in August 2026 at the age of 34 while receiving medical treatment abroad. The cause of death was not publicly disclosed. Oyo became king in 1995 at just three years of age, making him famous internationally as the world’s youngest reigning monarch. He later became associated with the preservation of Tooro culture and traditional institutions.
