India Lifts Export Ban on Wheat Flour Products

August 25, 2026
Current Context: On 24 August 2026, the Government of India lifted the export ban on wheat flour and related products with immediate effect. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) changed the export policy for these products from Prohibited to Free.

  • The decision covers atta, maida, semolina (rava/suji), wholemeal atta and resultant atta under HS Code 1101.
  • Earlier, exports were restricted and allowed only within specified quotas. In January and February 2026, the government had permitted limited quantities while keeping the overall policy prohibited.
  • The move reflects an improvement in domestic wheat availability and stocks, allowing the government to support farmers and exporters without significantly affecting food security. Earlier in 2026, the government had cited comfortable wheat availability while permitting additional exports.
  • In a separate decision, the government also changed the export policy for certain categories of wheat and durum wheat from prohibited to free.
