Rise of India’s Electric Vehicles Ecosystem

August 07, 2026
Current Context: India’s electric vehicle ecosystem continued to expand rapidly in 2026, supported by rising EV sales, greater model availability, battery manufacturing, charging infrastructure and government support under schemes such as PM E-DRIVE.

Rise of India’s Electric Vehicles Ecosystem

Key Points
  • Rapid Growth in EV Adoption: Electric vehicles are becoming increasingly popular in India, particularly electric two-wheelers and three-wheelers, because of lower running costs, improved technology and greater availability of models.
  • PM E-DRIVE Scheme: The PM Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement Scheme supports EV adoption through incentives for e-two-wheelers, e-three-wheelers, e-buses, e-ambulances and e-trucks. As of 27 January 2026, around 22.12 lakh EVs had been sold under the scheme.
  • Charging Infrastructure: The government is expanding public EV charging facilities across cities and highways. A national conference on EV charging infrastructure was organised by the Ministry of Heavy Industries on 12 May 2026 in Bengaluru to accelerate development of a reliable nationwide charging network.
  • Battery Manufacturing: India is promoting domestic manufacturing of advanced batteries and EV components to reduce dependence on imports and strengthen the local EV supply chain.
  • Environmental Benefits: Greater EV adoption can reduce petrol and diesel consumption, lower urban air pollution and decrease greenhouse-gas emissions. PM E-DRIVE data also tracks significant fuel savings and CO₂ reductions from EV use.
  • Economic Opportunities: The growing EV ecosystem is creating new opportunities in vehicle manufacturing, battery technology, charging stations, software, recycling and related services.
  • Major Challenges: High upfront prices, limited charging infrastructure in smaller cities, charging time, battery costs and dependence on imported critical minerals remain important obstacles to faster EV adoption.
  • By 27 July 2026, more than 6.44 lakh EVs had been registered under PM E-DRIVE-linked categories during FY 2026-27. The government is also focusing on building a nationwide charging network to make EV adoption easier and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. (PM E-DRIVE)

Question:

Q1. What is the main objective of the PM E-DRIVE Scheme?
