UPI Completes 10 Years

Current Context: The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) completed 10 years on 25 August 2026. It was launched by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) under the regulatory oversight of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and has become the backbone of India’s digital payments system.

UPI Completes 10 Years
  • UPI transaction volume increased from about 1.78 crore transactions in FY 2016-17 to over 24,162 crore transactions in FY 2025-26.
  • Transaction value rose from around ₹0.07 lakh crore to nearly ₹314 lakh crore during the same period.
  • UPI accounted for about 84% of India’s digital payments in FY 2025-26.
  • As of July 2026, around 741 banks were live on UPI, compared with only 21 banks at launch.
  • UPI is now accepted in 11 countries and accounted for about 49% of global real-time payment volume in 2025.
  • In July 2026, UPI recorded about 2,366 crore transactions, the highest monthly volume in its decade-long journey.
