FASTag Users Can Switch Banks Under One Tag System

September 12, 2026
Current Context: On 11 September 2026, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari launched the OneTag facility at the Global Fintech Fest 2026 in Mumbai. It enables FASTag users to switch their FASTag-issuing bank without changing the physical tag fixed on their vehicle.
FASTag Users Can Switch Banks Under One Tag System
Key Points:
  • OneTag provides FASTag portability: Users dissatisfied with their existing issuer bank can move to another participating bank.
  • Same physical tag continues: The FASTag sticker already fixed on the vehicle’s windscreen does not need to be removed or replaced.
  • Similar to mobile-number portability: Just as users can change telecom operators while retaining their mobile number, they can change FASTag issuers while retaining the existing tag.
  • Earlier system: Users had to close their old FASTag account, complete fresh onboarding and KYC, purchase a new tag and replace the sticker.
  • Porting facility: Users can initiate the bank-switching process through the Rajmargyatra mobile application.
  • Developed by: The system was jointly developed by the Indian Highways Management Company Limited and the National Payments Corporation of India.
  • Payment network: OneTag operates under the National Electronic Toll Collection or NETC FASTag system.
  • Single active FASTag: The facility follows the One Vehicle, One FASTag rule. Only one FASTag should remain active for a particular vehicle.
  • Benefits: It reduces inconvenience and replacement costs while increasing customer choice and competition among FASTag-issuing banks.
  • Importance: FASTag processes more than 98% of India’s toll payments, with over 13 crore tags issued.
  • Future objective: OneTag supports the government’s plan to introduce a barrier-free digital tolling system by March 2027.
