Current Affairs One-Liner: 29th October 2026

October 29, 2026

 National:

  • On 27 October 2026, the Supreme Court questioned the Centre over the substantial difference between the procurement prices and maximum retail prices of medicines. The hearing examined whether existing price controls and trade-margin restrictions adequately protect patients. The Court also questioned why restrictions applicable to certain anti-cancer medicines could not cover other drugs. It reserved its order; the hearing should therefore not be described as a final judgment imposing a universal medicine-price cap.
  • On 22 October 2026, the International Union for Conservation of Nature, IUCN, released an assessment warning that 122 of 127 assessed warm-water coral reef ecosystem units—approximately 96%—face a critically endangered outlook under projected future conditions. The findings highlight the threat from ocean warming and related pressures. The percentage concerns assessed ecosystem units and projected collapse risk over the coming decades. It does not mean that 96% of the world’s individual corals have already died or that all reefs have already collapsed.
  • On 28 October 2026, Cyclone Arnab crossed the Andhra Pradesh coast near Yanam, between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam. Reports placed the crossing approximately 40 kilometres southwest of Yanam, with sustained winds of 125–135 kilometres per hour, gusting to 150 kilometres per hour. The cyclone brought risks from destructive winds, heavy rainfall and coastal inundation. Its landfall location should be distinguished from the wider districts affected by rain and emergency preparations.
  • On 27 October 2026, the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, DPIIT, launched the sixth edition of the National Startup Awards. Applications were invited from 27 October to 20 November 2026. The edition includes 20 sectoral categories and three special categories, including recognition for student innovators. The awards identify startups contributing through innovation, economic activity and social impact, while providing recognition that can improve their visibility within India’s entrepreneurial ecosystem.
  • On 27 October 2026, the Ministry of Tribal Affairs announced nationwide Janjatiya Gaurav celebrations from 1–15 November 2026. The fortnight honours tribal communities, their cultural heritage and their contribution to India’s freedom struggle and development. It culminates on 15 November, the birth anniversary of Bhagwan Birsa Munda, observed as Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas. Planned activities include public programmes and development-related initiatives intended to strengthen awareness, participation and access to services.
  • On 27 October 2026, the Uttar Pradesh Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, approved the PRAGATI Artificial Intelligence and Robotics Park in Greater Noida. PRAGATI stands for Platform for Robotics and AI Growth Through Technology and Innovation. Planned across approximately 70 acres, the park will support research, prototyping, testing, certification and technology development. Cabinet approval establishes the project’s policy basis; it does not mean that the proposed facilities have already become operational.
  • Reporting on 27 October 2026 stated that revised toll provisions would introduce annual passes from 1 November for eligible residents living within 20 kilometres of a toll plaza. The reported charges are ₹1,500 or ₹3,000, depending on the applicable location category. The facility concerns eligible non-commercial vehicles with valid FASTags and use of the specified local plaza. It should be distinguished from an annual pass allowing travel across the national highway network.
  • On 27 October 2026, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami presented a supplementary budget of ₹7,844.18 crore for 2026–27 at the Assembly in Gairsain. The additional proposals increased the state’s aggregate budget to approximately ₹1.19 lakh crore. The supplementary provision supports additional expenditure requirements, including infrastructure and welfare priorities. A supplementary budget adds to the original annual allocation; its presentation does not establish that the entire amount has already been spent.

International:

  • Reporting on 29 October 2026 stated that India supported a United Nations General Assembly resolution calling for an end to the United States’ economic, commercial and financial embargo against Cuba. India’s position emphasised the effects of restrictions on Cuba’s population and development. The annual resolution provides an international diplomatic assessment of the embargo. Adoption by the General Assembly does not itself repeal US domestic legislation or automatically remove the restrictions imposed under it.
  • On 27 October 2026, India reaffirmed its biodiversity commitments at CBD COP-17 in Yerevan, Armenia. The meeting concerns implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity and the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. India highlighted biodiversity conservation and the effective implementation of agreed global targets. The framework connects ecosystem protection, restoration and sustainable use with finance and implementation. CBD COP-17 is a biodiversity conference, distinct from the climate negotiations conducted under the UN climate convention.
  • In October 2026, the World Justice Project’s Rule of Law Index placed India 88th among 143 countries, while Denmark led the rankings. The index examines dimensions including constraints on government power, absence of corruption, fundamental rights, regulatory enforcement and justice systems. Its findings draw on public experiences and expert assessments. The overall position combines several factors, so it should not be interpreted as a ranking based solely on court efficiency or the number of laws enacted.

Banking and Finance:

  • On 27 October 2026, PhonePe announced Tatkal NPS, a digital facility for opening accounts under the National Pension System, in partnership with banking institutions. The initiative seeks to make retirement planning more accessible through a familiar digital platform and support smaller contributions. NPS is a regulated retirement savings system, with investments linked to the selected pension funds and asset allocation. Opening an account through PhonePe should not be confused with purchasing a bank fixed deposit.
  • On 27 October 2026, RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra addressed the 36th Conference of State Finance Secretaries in Mumbai, emphasising prudent borrowing, better expenditure quality and effective cash management. His remarks highlighted the importance of using public resources productively while maintaining debt sustainability. The discussion also covered technology-supported financial administration. The address provided policy guidance to state governments; it should not be presented as a new uniform borrowing limit or an automatic prohibition on state borrowing.
  • On 26 October 2026, the State Bank of India inaugurated its CyRIS Centre of Excellence in Mumbai to strengthen cybersecurity capabilities. The centre supports areas such as threat intelligence, digital forensics, malware analysis, ethical hacking and fraud analytics. It also contributes to training bank personnel and examining emerging security challenges. The initiative reflects the growing importance of protecting digital banking infrastructure, customer information and payment systems as financial services increasingly depend on connected technology.

Economy:

  • On 26 October 2026, CBIC issued Circular No. 257/03/2026-GST, clarifying the processing of GST registration applications. Eligible applications under the specified Rule 14A and Rule 9A routes receive automatic registration within three working days. The guidance also seeks to reduce unnecessary queries and requests for documents. Other applications remain subject to their applicable scrutiny and verification procedures; the three-day automatic route should not be treated as an unconditional entitlement for every applicant.
  • On 28 October 2026, India and Mexico announced the launch of negotiations towards a Preferential Trade Agreement, PTA, through agreed Terms of Reference. The proposed arrangement seeks to improve market access and strengthen bilateral commercial relations. A PTA generally offers negotiated preferences on selected products rather than necessarily eliminating duties across almost all trade. Launching negotiations establishes the process and scope for discussions; it does not mean that a completed agreement has already entered into force.
  • On 27 October 2026, Wabtec announced equipment orders worth approximately US$94 million, or ₹839 crore, for 24-coach Vande Bharat sleeper trains. The orders cover systems including brakes, doors and gangways, supporting the development of India’s long-distance sleeper train fleet. These components contribute to train safety, passenger movement and operational performance. The announcement concerns equipment contracts, rather than a contract for Wabtec to manufacture and supply complete Vande Bharat sleeper trainsets.

Science and Technology:

  • On 26 October 2026, researchers reported fossil evidence of Gerrothorax maritimus, a marine amphibian that lived approximately 237 million years ago during the Late Triassic. Fossils discovered in Guizhou, China, supported an interpretation that the animal lived in a marine environment. The research, published in Nature Ecology & Evolution, expands understanding of amphibian evolution and ancient ecosystems. Its importance lies in evidence of marine adaptation within a group generally associated with freshwater and terrestrial habitats.
  • Research announced by UC San Diego on 25 September 2026, and subsequently receiving renewed coverage, demonstrated the use of specially engineered laser light to switch magnetic information. The team worked with a material containing nine alternating layers of platinum and cobalt, overcoming limitations observed in thinner structures. Published in Nature Communications, the findings could support denser and more energy-efficient data storage. This is experimental research, rather than confirmation of an already available commercial optical-memory product.
  • On 26 October 2026, MIT highlighted Lumina, a simulation developed with collaborating researchers to investigate the universe’s early development. The modelling follows interactions involving galaxies, gas, dark matter and radiation, helping scientists study the emergence of structure and cosmic reionisation. The work covers approximately the first two billion years of cosmic history. Simulations allow researchers to test physical explanations against observations; they are computational models rather than direct recordings of the early universe.

Summits and Conferences:

  • Mumbai is scheduled to host Earthshot Prize activities on 16–17 November 2026, marking the initiative’s first hosting in India. The event brings attention to practical environmental solutions and connects innovators with potential supporters. The Earthshot Prize was founded by Prince William to encourage progress on major environmental challenges. Mumbai’s hosting was announced earlier in 2026, so October coverage should be treated as an update on the forthcoming event rather than its original announcement.

Defence:

  • On 27 October 2026, Poland and the United Kingdom signed a three-year defence cooperation plan in Warsaw. The framework covers military cooperation, including joint training, exercises and capability development. It reflects the countries’ efforts to strengthen defence readiness and coordination within the wider NATO security framework. The agreement provides a programme for bilateral cooperation; it should not be interpreted as the creation of a separate military alliance replacing the countries’ existing NATO commitments.
  • On 27 October 2026, Goa Shipyard Limited launched Srishti, its fourth Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel, built for the Indian Navy. Identified as Yard 1283, the vessel forms part of efforts to strengthen indigenous shipbuilding and maritime security capabilities. Offshore patrol vessels support activities such as surveillance and patrol duties. Launching places a ship afloat for subsequent work and trials; it is a different milestone from commissioning, when the vessel formally enters operational naval service.

Military Exercises:

  • On 27 October 2026, the 11th edition of Exercise Garuda Shakti began in Banyuwangi, Indonesia, with training scheduled until 6 November. The bilateral exercise brings together Indian and Indonesian special forces to improve interoperability, exchange operational experience and practise coordinated procedures. Such training helps participating personnel understand each other’s methods and strengthen military cooperation. Garuda Shakti should be distinguished from other similarly named exercises conducted by different services or with different partner countries.

MoUs:

  • On 26 October 2026, India’s Ministry of Culture and the Bibliothèque nationale de France, BnF, signed an MoU in Paris under the Gyan Bharatam Mission. Announced on 27 October, the agreement supports preservation, digitisation, research and dissemination of manuscript heritage. Cooperation includes identifying and digitising Indic-origin manuscripts held by BnF. The arrangement improves documentation and scholarly access.

Appointments:

  • On 27 October 2026, SSB Director General Sanjay Singhal was assigned additional charge of ITBP Director General, to take effect following Shatrujeet Singh Kapoor’s retirement on 31 October. Separately, Air Marshal Vikram Gaur was appointed Additional Secretary in the Department of Military Affairs. Singhal’s assignment is an interim additional responsibility, while Gaur’s appointment concerns the Ministry of Defence’s military administration.

Sports:

  • Reporting on 27 October 2026 stated that Russia topped the medal standings at the World Boxing U19 Championships in Budva, Montenegro. India’s Aditya won the men’s 55-kilogram gold medal, defeating Russia’s Islam Magomedov by a 4–1 decision. Russia finished with five gold medals, ahead of Uzbekistan’s four. The result concerns the under-19 championship, so Aditya’s achievement should be identified with its age group and weight category rather than described as a senior world title.
  • On 25 October 2026, Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli won the United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas. The victory was his ninth win of the 2026 Formula One season, strengthening his championship campaign. The United States Grand Prix is a race within the season-long Formula One World Championship. Winning this event, even as a ninth season victory, should be distinguished from mathematically securing the drivers’ world championship.

Important Days:

  • International Animation Day was observed on 28 October 2026 to celebrate animation as an artistic and cultural medium. Established by the International Animated Film Association, ASIFA, in 2002, the observance commemorates Émile Reynaud’s Théâtre Optique presentation in Paris on 28 October 1892. Activities commonly include screenings, workshops and exchanges between animation communities. The day recognises the diversity of animation, including independent films and experimental work, alongside its applications in commercial entertainment.
  • International Day of Care and Support was observed on 29 October 2026. Proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly, the day highlights the importance of paid and unpaid care, domestic work and accessible support systems. Its objectives include recognising and redistributing unpaid care responsibilities and promoting decent working conditions for care workers. The observance connects care policy with gender equality, disability inclusion and the needs of older persons, encouraging investment in resilient and inclusive care systems.
