National:

  • On 30 September 2026, the Union Cabinet approved an Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) for Delhi with an estimated cost of ₹1,789.52 crore. The project will cover 42 major traffic corridors and use technologies such as AI-enabled adaptive traffic signals, automatic enforcement and real-time traffic monitoring. It is intended to reduce congestion, improve emergency-vehicle movement and strengthen traffic management. The same Cabinet meeting also approved Green Energy Corridor Phase III, making both decisions important infrastructure-related developments.

  • On 30 September 2026, Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav launched implementation guidelines for National Coastal Mission 2.0 (NCM 2.0) in New Delhi. The ₹767-crore Central Sector Scheme will operate until 2030-31 across nine coastal states and four Union Territories. It focuses on coastal ecosystem restoration, pollution management, vulnerability assessment, sustainable tourism, biodiversity conservation and climate resilience. The programme also seeks to unlock opportunities under India’s Blue Economy while protecting coastal communities and natural ecosystems.
  • On 2 October 2026, the Tamil Nadu government expanded the Vettri Payanam free bus travel scheme for women and transgender persons. A total of 12,692 government buses were brought under the expanded programme, including several express, deluxe and mofussil services. The scheme is expected to benefit around 84.32 lakh women every day. By reducing travel costs, the initiative aims to improve access to employment, education, healthcare and public services while promoting greater mobility and economic participation among women.
  • On 2 October 2026, the Government of India, in consultation with the Union Territory administration of Ladakh, formally identified 28 places and geographical features using standard names on the official Survey of India map. These include peaks, passes, glaciers, valleys, rivers, lakes and land areas. The move is intended to improve accurate geographical identification and public awareness. Some of the locations are in strategically sensitive areas of Ladakh, making the development important from both administrative and national-security perspectives.
  • On 2 October 2026, Jawahar Dweep Marine Oil Terminal under the Mumbai Port Authority was declared India’s first plastic-free oil terminal. The announcement was made during Swachhata Abhiyan 2026 led by Union Ports, Shipping and Waterways Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. The initiative focuses on eliminating single-use plastic and making port operations more environmentally sustainable. Jawahar Dweep is an important petroleum-handling facility of Mumbai Port, and its plastic-free status supports broader cleanliness and sustainability efforts in India’s maritime sector.
  • On 2 October 2026, the foundation stone was laid for the Global Horticulture Hub – Rayalaseema Rising at Madanapalle in Andhra Pradesh. The project envisages investment of around ₹1 lakh crore and is planned in three phases across 10 districts. It will cover 201 clusters, more than 300 mandals and thousands of villages. The project aims to strengthen horticulture production, food processing, exports, logistics and farmer incomes while positioning Rayalaseema as a major global horticulture and agri-business centre.
  • In October 2026, President Droupadi Murmu gave assent to the Gujarat Uniform Civil Code Bill, 2026, clearing the final constitutional step required before implementation by the state. The law seeks to establish a common framework for selected civil matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance and related personal-law issues. Gujarat had already passed the Bill earlier in 2026, so the fresh development is specifically the President’s assent, rather than introduction of the legislation itself.

Banking:

  • On 30 September 2026, the Competition Commission of India (CCI) approved the proposed acquisition of certain equity shares in IndiaFirst Life Insurance Company Limited by BNP Paribas Cardif. BNP Paribas Cardif is a wholly owned subsidiary of France-based BNP Paribas, while IndiaFirst Life is an IRDAI-licensed life insurer operating in India. The CCI examines mergers and acquisitions to ensure that proposed combinations do not adversely affect competition. 
  • On 30 September 2026, Jio Financial Services Ltd and Allianz Europe B.V. jointly invested ₹640.10 crore in their 50:50 joint venture, Jio Allianz General Insurance Ltd, through a rights issue. Each partner contributed ₹320.05 crore. The funds are intended to support the insurer’s business operations and expansion. Jio Financial and Allianz had earlier entered into a 50:50 partnership covering general and health insurance, combining Jio’s digital distribution capabilities with Allianz’s global insurance expertise.
  • In September 2026, the HSBC Global Entrepreneurial Wealth Report 2026 found that 74% of Indian entrepreneurs surveyed were considering either relocating abroad or obtaining an additional overseas residency, compared with a global average of about 70%. Singapore was the most preferred destination among Indian respondents. The report also highlighted strong adoption of artificial intelligence among Indian business owners, with entrepreneurs increasingly investing in AI to improve productivity, business models and competitiveness. 

Economy:

  • On 30 September 2026, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) approved higher Minimum Support Prices for all six mandated Rabi crops for the 2027-28 marketing season. Wheat MSP was fixed at ₹2,610 per quintal, barley at ₹2,286, gram at ₹5,958, lentil at ₹7,390, rapeseed and mustard at ₹6,613 and safflower at ₹7,215. Safflower received the highest absolute increase of ₹675 per quintal, followed by rapeseed and mustard with an increase of ₹413.
  • On 30 September 2026, the Agriculture Ministry separately approved ₹5,547.99 crore of MSP procurement under the Price Support Scheme (PSS) for pulses and oilseeds in Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka and Telangana for the Kharif Marketing Season 2026-27. Around 7.06 lakh metric tonnes of commodities are planned for procurement. Uttar Pradesh received the largest approved procurement value of approximately ₹3,992.57 crore, followed by Karnataka and Telangana. The decision aims to protect farmers when market prices fall below MSP.
  • On 30 September 2026, the Cabinet approved Green Energy Corridor Phase III (GEC-III) with an estimated outlay of ₹1.86 lakh crore. The programme will strengthen intra-state transmission infrastructure to enable evacuation of up to 135 GW of renewable-energy capacity and provide 50 GWh of Battery Energy Storage Systems. The project is targeted for implementation by FY 2032-33. It is intended to improve grid stability, reduce renewable-energy curtailment and enable greater integration of solar and wind power into India’s electricity network.
  • From 1 October 2026, the Government of India reduced export duties on diesel and Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF). The export levy on diesel was reduced from ₹20 to ₹16 per litre, while the levy on ATF was cut from ₹15 to ₹10.50 per litre. The duty on petrol remained unchanged at ₹0.50 per litre. The move forms part of the government’s periodic review of petroleum-product export taxation based on global market conditions and domestic fuel availability.

Defence:

  • In late September 2026, Indian drone company Zuppa Geo Navigation Technologies and the Tamil Nadu Unmanned Aerial Vehicles Corporation (TNUAVC) agreed to develop a specialised drone-pilot and maintenance training programme for Indian Army personnel. The programme aims to train more than 2,000 Army personnel and Agniveers over three years, beginning in October 2026. Training will include classroom instruction, simulation and practical drone flying and is expected to prepare participants for DGCA-authorised Remote Pilot Certification for eligible drone categories.

Military Exercise:

  • The second edition of the ASEAN-India Maritime Exercise (AIME-2026) commenced on 28 September 2026 at Subic Bay in the Philippines. Indian Naval Ships Sahyadri and Kulish participated along with maritime forces from ASEAN member states. The exercise was conducted under the theme “Anchored in Trust, United at Sea.” It included harbour interactions, professional exchanges and a sea phase designed to improve interoperability, maritime cooperation and mutual understanding between India and ASEAN navies.

MoUs:

  • On 28 September 2026, the Ministry of Tribal Affairs and the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) signed an MoU in New Delhi for the preservation, documentation, digitisation, research and promotion of India’s tribal cultural heritage. The partnership aims to systematically record traditional knowledge, languages, customs, art forms and cultural practices of tribal communities. IGNCA, an autonomous institution under the Ministry of Culture, will provide research and documentation expertise to support long-term preservation and dissemination of tribal traditions.

Sports:

  • On 1 October 2026, the International Cricket Council (ICC) released the schedule for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027, which will be hosted jointly by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. The tournament will begin on 2 October 2027 and conclude with the final in Johannesburg on 21 November. Fourteen teams will participate. India will begin its campaign against Australia in Cape Town on 7 October, while the India-Pakistan match is scheduled for 10 October in Johannesburg.
  • On 2 October 2026, the Indian women’s recurve archery team of Kumkum Mohod, Ankita Bhakat and Kirti Sharma won India’s first-ever Asian Games gold medal in the women’s recurve team event. India defeated powerhouse South Korea 5-3 in set points in the final at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games in Japan. South Korea had historically dominated this discipline, making India’s victory particularly significant. The medal represented a major breakthrough for Indian recurve archery at the continental level.
  • On 2 October 2026, Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain won the women’s 75 kg boxing gold medal at the Asian Games on her 29th birthday. She defeated China’s Ziyi Bao by a unanimous 5-0 decision in the final. It was Lovlina’s first Asian Games gold and made her only the second Indian woman boxer after Mary Kom to win an Asian Games boxing title.
