October 15, 2026

National:

  • On 14 October 2026, reports stated that the Maharashtra government had expanded its drought declaration to cover 305 talukas, reflecting widespread agricultural and water stress. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced measures to support affected farmers and address worsening conditions. The declaration enables administrative action concerning drinking-water supply, agricultural relief and other assistance under applicable rules. Areas including Junnar and Ambegaon were among those identified. A drought declaration is an official assessment of conditions and eligibility for relief; the specific benefits available depend on the government’s orders and implementation guidelines.
  • On 14 October 2026, the Union Cabinet approved continuation of the National Social Assistance Programme for 2026–27 to 2030–31, with an outlay of ₹53,428 crore. Central assistance becomes ₹375 monthly for ages 0–79 and ₹625 for ages 80 and above. The changes are expected to benefit vulnerable households, with revised implementation guidelines to be issued within three months.
  • On 14 October 2026, the ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute, Kochi, highlighted that its Science, Technology and Innovation Hub had supported 84 fisheries-based micro-enterprises across eight Kerala districts during 2022–2026. Funded by the Department of Science and Technology, the initiative directly benefited 469 people, including 220 women. Activities include fish farming, ornamental aquaculture, shellfish cultivation, seafood processing and fish vending. The institute reported household-income improvements of 30–35% among beneficiaries. Training, technology transfer, entrepreneurial guidance and market connections helped participants diversify livelihoods and establish sustainable fisheries businesses.
  • On 14 October 2026, the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency, or HYDRAA, reported progress in restoring Kapra Lake in Hyderabad, Telangana. Local farmers voluntarily handed over approximately 70 acres within the lake’s Full Tank Level boundary to support rejuvenation. The restoration project has an estimated cost of ₹35 crore, with around 60% of work completed at the time of reporting. The initiative aims to improve the waterbody’s ecological condition and preserve its role as a bird habitat. Full Tank Level identifies the area associated with the lake’s maximum authorised water spread.
  • On 13 October 2026, Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh, also known as Lalan Singh, launched the redesigned website of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying. The website follows the Digital Brand Identity Manual Version 3.0, introduced by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. The redesign aims to strengthen the department’s digital presence and make information and government services more accessible, transparent and citizen-focused. It supports a consistent identity across government platforms. The initiative is relevant to digital governance, public-service accessibility and improved communication with stakeholders in the livestock and dairy sectors.

International:

  • On 13 October 2026, the Embassy of India in Jakarta, Indonesia, launched an artificial-intelligence avatar named Dewi to strengthen public outreach. Ambassador Sandeep Chakravorty introduced the initiative, which shares information about Indian culture, tourism, scholarships, business, investment opportunities and consular services. The avatar aims to make embassy communication more engaging and accessible to people in Indonesia. Its introduction coincided with Navaratri and Durga Puja celebrations. Dewi represents the use of emerging technologies in public diplomacy, helping explain India-related opportunities and services while supporting wider awareness of the India–Indonesia partnership.
  • On 13 October 2026, Oscar Whitfield, a young British photographer living in Zimbabwe, was named Young Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2026. His winning black-and-white photograph, Labour of Love, shows a dung beetle pushing a ball of dung. The competition is organised by the Natural History Museum, London, and was in its 62nd edition. Whitfield’s image highlighted an often-overlooked animal and its ecological importance. The competition received 65,403 entries from 121 countries and territories. Winning photographs are scheduled for exhibition at the museum from 16 October 2026.
  • On 14 October 2026, reports highlighted Fernwayer’s Friendliest Cities Index 2026, which ranked Mérida, Mexico, first with 95 points out of 100. Glasgow and Bogotá followed with 94.9 and 94.5, respectively. Delhi scored 43.6, placing it among the 10 lowest-scoring cities in the study. The index analysed approximately 1.2 million Reddit comments concerning 200 cities, assessing descriptions of friendliness and hospitality. It measures sentiment in the selected online material rather than an official assessment of residents. Its findings should be distinguished from other travel publications’ reader-choice rankings.

Banking:

  • On 13 October 2026, Union Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal announced two credit-risk insurance products for Indian shipbuilders at the 21st Maritime State Development Council meeting in Mumbai. ECGC Limited’s Shipbuilding Project Credit Risk Insurance Policy covers export-oriented projects, while New India Assurance’s Business Credit Shield Policy–Shipbuilders protects domestic projects. Introduced under the National Shipbuilding Mission, the products address financial risks arising from commercial and political non-payment. The objective is to strengthen confidence among shipyards and lenders, improve financing support and help Indian shipbuilders compete for domestic and international contracts.
  • On 14 October 2026, the International Monetary Fund, World Bank Group and Bank of Thailand launched the Bangkok Blueprint for Fraud-Resilient Financial Services during their annual meetings in Bangkok, Thailand. The framework provides 12 key considerations for tackling cyber-enabled fraud through coordinated action across the financial ecosystem. It emphasises cooperation among regulators, financial institutions, technology providers and other stakeholders, including across borders. The purpose is to protect consumers and preserve confidence in digital finance. Participants in the launch included Kristalina Georgieva, Anshula Kant and Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey.
  • On 12 October 2026, Karnataka Bank launched Trade Konnect, a digital platform for import transactions, export transactions and outward cross-border remittances. Customers can submit requests online without visiting a branch for each transaction, improving access to the bank’s international-banking services. Announced in Mangaluru, the platform supports businesses and other customers conducting overseas transactions. The initiative forms part of the bank’s digital-service expansion and aims to simplify transaction initiation. Digital submission remains subject to applicable documentation, verification and foreign-exchange requirements; the platform changes the service channel rather than removing regulatory obligations.
  • On 14 October 2026, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved 10955230 Canada Inc., a Fairfax Financial Holdings subsidiary, as the strategic buyer for a 60.72% stake in IDBI Bank. The consideration is approximately ₹52,878.08 crore. The transaction covers 30.48% held by the Government of India and 30.24% held by Life Insurance Corporation of India. It represents a major step in IDBI Bank’s strategic disinvestment. Fairfax clarified that selection as the strategic buyer is not the final stage of the sale process, with further transaction steps remaining before completion.
Economy:

  • On 5 October 2026, reports based on Kpler’s vessel-tracking data showed that Oman had become India’s largest LNG supplier during September 2026, overtaking the United States. Imports from Oman rose 11.6% month-on-month to approximately 0.59 million tonnes, while US supplies fell 60.7% to around 0.34 million tonnes. The shift reflected changing cargo availability and competition for American LNG amid disruptions in West Asia. LNG means liquefied natural gas. The ranking refers specifically to September’s shipments, rather than establishing Oman as India’s largest supplier over the entire financial year.
  • On 14 October 2026, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari inaugurated a major phenol and acetone complex at Haldia, developed within the Haldia Petrochemicals group. The approximately ₹6,000 crore project includes India’s largest phenol-production unit and an on-purpose propylene facility using olefin-conversion technology. The complex strengthens domestic supplies of chemicals used by downstream industries, including plastics, resins and other manufactured products. Increased local production is intended to reduce import dependence and support industrial development. The project also reinforces Haldia, West Bengal, as an important centre for petrochemical manufacturing and associated investment.
  • On 14 October 2026, NITI Aayog released a Data Centre Evaluation Framework to help states assess proposed data-centre projects. Developed with Deloitte India, it recommends linking project assessment to verified availability of electricity, water, land and supporting infrastructure. It also encourages states to compare economic benefits with incentives and public support. CEO Anurag Jain emphasised treating data centres as strategic infrastructure. The framework supports consistent evaluation, sustainable resource use and measurable outcomes. It is a planning framework and recommendation to states, rather than evidence that a single nationwide approval rule has already become law.
  • On 12 October 2026, the Research, Development and Innovation Fund announced its first cohort of 19 Second-Level Fund Managers, with commitments totalling ₹7,131 crore. The Empowered Group of Secretaries had approved the selection on 8 October. The cohort includes 14 Alternative Investment Funds and five Focused Research Organisations. Part of the government’s ₹1 lakh crore RDI initiative, the mechanism seeks to channel long-term finance into private-sector research, emerging technologies and deep-tech innovation. The announced amount represents funding commitments through selected intermediaries, rather than confirmation that the full sum has already been disbursed.
  • On 12 October 2026, reports detailed an upward revision in India’s growth forecast by BMI, a Fitch Solutions company. BMI raised its projection for FY2026–27 to 7.5%, from 6.8%, citing strong economic momentum and investment activity. Its assessment projected growth of around 8.3% during July–September 2026, following 7.8% growth in April–June. The outlook highlighted investment linked to emerging technologies while recognising risks from expensive oil and adverse weather. For examinations, attribute the 7.5% forecast specifically to BMI, rather than confusing it with forecasts issued separately by Fitch Ratings, the IMF or RBI.
  • On 14 October 2026, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry released data showing India’s Wholesale Price Index inflation at 11.39% in September 2026, compared with 9.92% in August. Higher prices across primary articles, fuel and power, and manufactured products contributed to the increase. The figure measures the year-on-year change in wholesale prices, comparing September 2026 with September 2025. It is different from Consumer Price Index inflation, which measures retail price changes faced by consumers. The release indicated substantial price pressure within production and distribution chains, especially from energy and food-related costs.

Sports:

  • On 13 October 2026, West Bengal Sports Minister Indranil Khan announced an exhibition match between Barcelona Legends and Real Madrid Legends in Kolkata on 25 November 2026. The venue is the Vivekananda Yuva Bharati Krirangan, commonly known as Salt Lake Stadium. The fixture brings together former players associated with the Spanish clubs and presents their famous El Clásico rivalry in a legends format. It is an exhibition match rather than a competitive fixture between the clubs’ current first teams. Final player participation and match results should therefore be reported only after confirmation.
  • On 9 October 2026, Hockey India announced the match schedule for the Hero Men’s Asian Champions Trophy Punjab 2026, scheduled from 27 October to 5 November. Jalandhar’s Olympian Surjit Singh Hockey Stadium will host league matches, followed by the decisive stages at Mohali’s Olympian Balbir Singh Senior International Hockey Stadium. The tournament is conducted under the Asian Hockey Federation with Hockey India and Punjab’s support. Bangladesh replaced Pakistan following Pakistan’s withdrawal. India enters as defending champion. The event remains upcoming, so a winner or final medal result has not yet been determined.
  • On 13 October 2026, Boxing Federation of India President Ajay Singh issued an interim suspension order against Secretary General Pramod Kumar, pending an inquiry. Allegations included financial irregularities, issuing a broadcasting-related work order without required approval and failure to cooperate with investigations. The order restricted Kumar from performing secretary-general duties or acting on the federation’s behalf. It explicitly stated that suspension did not constitute a final determination of the allegations. The development arose amid a wider leadership dispute and is relevant to governance, financial accountability and administrative oversight in national sports federations.

Science and Technology:

  • On 14 October 2026, reports highlighted an Early Bronze Age shipwreck near Kekova Island, Antalya, Türkiye, estimated to be approximately 4,400–4,700 years old. The research team includes Hakan Öniz of Akdeniz University and ceramics specialist Karin Sowada of Macquarie University. Pottery vessels and anchors helped establish its age and significance for ancient maritime trade. Researchers consider it a candidate for the oldest known shipwreck, although investigation continues. The remains may improve understanding of early trading connections involving the Levant, Egypt and Anatolia, around the period when Egypt’s great pyramids were constructed.
  • On 29 September 2026, a study in Frontiers in Fungal Biology described Dianjunus rex, a newly identified giant fungus from Yunnan, China; the discovery received wider publicity in October. Nicknamed D-rex, it represents a new fungal family, Dianjunaceae, with a lineage estimated to extend back approximately 65 million years. Researchers used physical characteristics and genetic analysis to establish its classification. Specimens can reach roughly half a metre in height and exceed two kilograms. It is a living fungus with an ancient evolutionary lineage, rather than a newly unearthed prehistoric fossil.
  • On 12 October 2026, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India reported that India’s internet subscription base had reached approximately 1,114.17 million at the end of June 2026, exceeding 1.11 billion. This compared with about 1.093 billion three months earlier, representing quarterly growth of approximately 1.96%. Broadband subscriptions accounted for the overwhelming majority. Rural internet penetration remained approximately 49.07 subscriptions per 100 people, highlighting the digital divide. These figures count subscriptions, which should not automatically be interpreted as the number of distinct individuals, since a person may hold multiple connections.
  • As of 15 October 2026, the TRISHNA satellite mission, jointly developed by ISRO and France’s CNES, remained scheduled for launch in 2027. Its name expands to Thermal infraRed Imaging Satellite for High-resolution Natural resource Assessment. The mission will measure surface temperatures to support water-resource management, agricultural irrigation, ecosystem monitoring and urban studies. CNES supplies the thermal-infrared instrument, complemented by an ISRO optical sensor. Planned features include a 761-kilometre Sun-synchronous orbit, a five-year lifetime and observations of the same equatorial location approximately every three days. It remains a mission under development.
  • On 14 October 2026, the Technology Development Board, under the Department of Science and Technology, announced an agreement providing ₹151 crore in debt financing to ideaForge Technology, Mumbai, for YETI. Target specifications include carrying up to 200 kilograms over 200 kilometres. Funding supports advancement from Technology Readiness Level 4 to Level 9. The platform is intended for difficult logistics environments; its performance figures are development targets rather than confirmed operational achievements.

Defence:

  • On 14 October 2026, the Defence Research and Development Organisation announced successful configuration and testing of a Quantum Key Distribution platform on the live network of the Proof and Experimental Establishment, Chandipur, Odisha. Developed under DRDO’s Microelectronic Devices, Computational Systems and Cyber Security cluster, with production partner Taqbit Labs, the platform supports secure distribution of cryptographic keys and detection of eavesdropping attempts. Its application protects sensitive information associated with weapon trials and defence communications. The test demonstrated integration into an operational network, advancing indigenous capabilities in quantum-secured communication rather than merely laboratory experimentation.
  • On 14 October 2026, IIT Kanpur announced plans for a defence drone hub in collaboration with the Ministry of Defence, focusing on indigenous development of critical components currently imported. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh launched the institute’s Greater Than Us fundraising campaign at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi. The campaign targets US$1 billion by March 2029 to support research, talent and infrastructure. Priority fields include drones, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, semiconductors and quantum technologies. The proposed hub seeks closer coordination between academic researchers, the armed forces, DRDO and industry to address practical defence requirements.
  • On 13 October 2026, the Indian Coast Guard inducted an indigenous Advanced Light Helicopter Mk-III, bearing identification CG 875, at Ratnagiri, Maharashtra. The aircraft joined the Coast Guard Region West, strengthening aviation support along India’s western coastline. The ALH Mk-III supports maritime operations such as surveillance, search and rescue and assistance during emergencies at sea. Its induction reinforces the Coast Guard’s operational reach and India’s emphasis on indigenous defence equipment. For examinations, distinguish the ALH Mk-III helicopter from fixed-wing patrol aircraft and associate this induction with Ratnagiri in Maharashtra.

Summits and Conference:

  • On 13 October 2026, India hosted the first BIMSTEC Home Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi, chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The collaboration covers associated components, subsystems and technologies. Course-correction fuzes enable adjustments to a shell’s trajectory during flight, helping improve accuracy. The partnership seeks to strengthen domestic capabilities in precision-guided artillery ammunition and reduce dependence on imported technology. The announcement establishes an industrial-development framework; it should not be interpreted as confirmation that the proposed products have already been inducted into military service.
  • On 12 October 2026, the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship announced shareholders’ agreements to upgrade nine government ITIs in two clusters under PM-SETU. The partners are the Directorate General of Training, the governments of Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh, and ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India. The State Duma adopted the legislation on 1 October, followed by Federation Council approval on 2 October. The underlying intergovernmental agreement was signed in New Delhi on 5 December 2025. It creates a formal framework for temporary labour mobility between the countries. The development is relevant to bilateral economic relations and worker cooperation. Ratification should not be confused with an automatic entitlement to employment or exemption from applicable immigration procedures.
