RBI Grants Core Investment Company Registration to Indiabulls Limited

October 06, 2026

Current Context: On 2 October 2026, Indiabulls Limited disclosed that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had granted it a Certificate of Registration as a Core Investment Company (CIC) under the applicable provisions of the RBI Act.

RBI Grants Core Investment Company Registration to Indiabulls Limited

  • Key Points:What is a Core Investment Company? A CIC is a type of non-banking financial company (NBFC) whose main business is holding investments in shares, securities or loans of companies within its own group, rather than carrying out regular retail lending.
  • What changed for Indiabulls? The RBI registration brings Indiabulls under the regulatory framework applicable to CICs, which includes specific conditions relating to investment structure, leverage, capital and group exposure.
  • Company background: Indiabulls Limited was formerly known as Yaari Digital Integrated Services Limited. Important clarification: The CIC registration does not mean Indiabulls has received permission to start new banking or retail lending operations. CIC status primarily relates to the company’s role as an investment-holding entity for group companies.
  • Applicability under review: Indiabulls has said it is examining whether the CIC classification is applicable to its present structure. If it concludes that the registration is not applicable, it may surrender the Certificate of Registration.
  • Why RBI regulates CICs: Large holding companies can create significant financial linkages within corporate groups. RBI regulation aims to monitor leverage, financial stability, concentration of investments and systemic risks associated with such entities.
  • Regulatory angle: CICs are regulated by RBI as part of the broader NBFC framework. A CIC that meets the prescribed asset-size and other conditions may fall under tighter prudential regulation as a Systemically Important CIC.
