Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi inaugurated the first International Consumer Protection Conference in New Delhi.
- It was held from October 26 to 27 October 2017
- The theme of the conference was “Empowering consumers in new markets” for the South, South East and East Asian Countries
- It was chaired by Shri Ram Vilas Paswan, Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution.
Highlights of the Conference
- comprehensive implementation of the United Nations Guidelines for Consumer Protection to ensure more effective protection efforts in all countries
- participation and engagement of consumer associations, businesses, and the academia to make a successful consumer policy-making and enforcement.
- protection of consumers’ rights in the digital context
- efforts to achieve financial consumer literacy and inclusion
- Consumer education to maximize consumer empowerment
- Regional Consumer Protection Conferences will be considered, in consultations with countries in the Region regarding the structure and organisational details to meet the objectives
