First International Conference on Consumer Protection Held in New Delhi

 Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi inaugurated the first International Consumer Protection Conference in New Delhi.


  • It was held from  October 26 to 27 October 2017
  • The theme of the conference was “Empowering consumers in new markets” for the South, South East and East Asian Countries
  • It was chaired by Shri Ram Vilas Paswan, Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution. 

Highlights of the Conference

  • comprehensive implementation of the United Nations Guidelines for Consumer Protection to ensure more effective protection efforts in all countries
  • participation and engagement of consumer associations, businesses, and the academia to make a successful consumer policy-making and enforcement.
  •  protection of consumers’ rights in the digital context 
  • efforts to achieve financial consumer literacy and inclusion
  • Consumer education to maximize consumer empowerment
  •  Regional Consumer Protection Conferences will be considered, in consultations with countries in the Region regarding the structure and organisational details to meet the objectives
