India is taking revolutionary steps into defence sector and with the country has been testing ultra-modern, hi-tech and power missile and another milestone was achieved yesterday when India successfully tested indigenously developed Advanced Air Defence (AAD) supersonic interceptor missile.
This was the third supersonic interceptor tested this year and it was tested over the Bay of Bengal.
Capabilities of AAD
- It can destroy any incoming ballistic missile and can tackle hostile missiles with a 2,000-km strike range.
- The missile weighs around 1.2 tonnes and it is equipped with a navigation system, a hi-tech computer and an electro-mechanical activator.
- The has its boasts of its own mobile launcher, a secure data link for interception, independent tracking and homing capabilities and sophisticated radars.

PAD and AAD
Indian Ballistic Missile Defence Programme is a double-tiered system consisting of two land and sea-based interceptor missiles, namely the Prithvi Air Defence (PAD)/ Pradyumna Ballistic Missile Interceptor missile for high altitude interception, and the Advanced Air Defence (AAD) Ashwin Ballistic Missile Interceptor/ Missile for lower altitude interception.
The PAD was tested in November 2006, followed by the AAD in December 2007.
With the test of the PAD missile, India became the fourth country to have successfully developed an anti-ballistic missile system, after United States, Russia, and Israel.
