ISRO to launch 31 satellites in one go

The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) said that it would launch its 31 satellites in one go on 10th January 2018.

  • It will be the first PSLV (Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle) Mission after the failure of the navigation satellite IRNSS-1H in August 2017.
  • This mission’s main payload would be CARTOSAT- 2 series earth observation satellite.
  • The launch is scheduled from the spaceport in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh with the help of PSLV-C40.
  • The mission comprises launch of Cartosat-2 series earth observation satellite along with 28 other Nano satellites from abroad (including USA and Finland) and one micro and one Nano satellite from India.

ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization)

  • It is the space agency of the Government of India, managed by the Department of Space which reports to the Prime Minister of India.
  • It was formed in 1969 and is headquartered in Bengaluru.
  • Its mission is to “harness space technology for national development, while pursuing space science research and planetary exploration.”
  • Mr. Alur Seelin Kiran Kumar is the current chairman of the organization.

What is IRNSS?

  • It is Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System with an operational name NAVIC.
  • NAVIC stands for Navigation with Indian Constellation. 
  • It is India’s independent regional Navigation Satellite System.
  • It is a Global Positioning System which is designed to provide real-time positioning and timing services.
  • During the Kargil War in 1999, India was completely dependent on American GPS. This triggered the need for an indigenous navigation satellite system for India.
