Every year on the 24th of January, the National Girl Child Day is celebrated as a national observance day for the girl child.

  • The theme for this year was “A girl is flower, not a thorn”.
  • This day is celebrated in order to increase the awareness among people about all the inequalities faced by the girl child in the society.
  • National girl child day has been started by the Government of India.as a national girls’ development mission 
  • This mission raises the awareness among people all over the country about the importance of girl’s promotion and empowerment.
  • National Girl Child Day celebration was started by the Women and Child Development Ministry since 2008.
  • It aims to highlight the inequalities faced by a majority of girls in India.

Objectives of the National Girl Child Day

  • The National Girl Child Day is celebrated to increase awareness about inequalities faced by girls in the Indian society and remove them.
  • To ensure every girl child gets proper respect and value in the society.
  • To increase participation against diminishing girl child sex ratio in India and to change the Indian society’s mind-set about having a girl child.
  • To spread awareness about the role of the girl child.
  • To address inequalities and difficulties faced by the girl child.
  • To spread gender equality among people in India and breaking myths and stereotypes around gender.
  • Rapid Reporting System for SAG launched on the National Girl Child Day
  • The phase 1 of the Rapid Reporting System (RSS) for the SAG (Scheme for Adolescent Girls) was launched on the National Girl Child Day.
  • It was launched by the Secretary of the Ministry of Women and Child Development (MWCD), Mr. Rakesh Srivastava.
  • RRS is a web based online monitoring system developed for the Scheme for Adolescent Girls in New Delhi.
  • At present, the Ministry of Women and Child Development is implementing this scheme in the selected 508 districts across the country.

  • The basic objective of the Scheme for Adolescent Girls is to improve the nutritional, health and development status of adolescent girls and to promote amongst them the awareness about health, hygiene, nutrition, family care etc.
