West Indies to Host 2018 Women’s World T20

The International Council has announced that the 2018 edition of the Women’s World T20 will be hosted by West Indies from November 9-24.

  • West Indies will be defending their title that they won in 2016 in Kolkata, with an eight wicket victory over Australia. 
  • The three venues selected by Cricket West Indies through a bidding process are Antigua and Barbuda, Guyana and St. Lucia. These venues have been ratified by the ICC (International Cricket Council) as well. 
  • The 2018 Women’s World T20 will be the first stand-alone ICC Women’s World T20 after the past five events were played alongside the men’s event. 
  • The preliminary round matches will be played at the Guyana National Stadium and Darren Sammy Stadium in St. Lucia whereas the two semi-final and final matches will be played at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua and Barbuda. 
  • It will be the sixth edition of the ICC Women’s World T20 and the qualifier tournament is scheduled to be held in July 2018. 
  • West Indies had hosted the World Cup in 2007 and then staged the World T20 in 2010. 

ICC Women’s World Twenty20

  • The ICC Women’s World Twenty20 is a biannual international championship for women’s twenty20 International cricket. It is organized by the International Cricket Council which is the governing body for cricket. The first edition of this tournament was held in England in 2009. The most recent edition was held in 2016 which was won by West Indies. Having won three tournaments, Australia has emerged as the team with the most number of wins at the World T20. It follows the round robin and knockout tournament format. The Round Robin tournament is one in which each contestant meets all other contestants in turn whereas the knockout tournament is one in which the contestant which gets defeated is eliminated immediately from the tournament.
