Every year on 15th January, India observes Army Day. This year India's is celebrating 70th Army Day.
President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi greeted the officers and troops of the Indian Army.
Background
The day is commemorated in recognition of Field Marshal Kodandera M. Cariappa's taking over as the first Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army from General Sir Francis Butcher, the last British Commander-in-Chief of India, on 15th January 1949.
On this day we salute the soldiers who sacrificed their lives to protect the country and its citizens. In 1942, K M Cariappa becomes the first Indian Army Officer who was passed on to command a unit.
