Solo Climbing on Mount Everest Banned by Nepal

Nepal bans solo climbers from scaling Mount Everest and its other mountains to avoid accidents.
These new safety regulations also prevent blind climbers and double amputees from attempting to scale Mount Everest without a valid medical certificate.

Reasons for ban


  • There have been a number of casualties this year. Therefore these new rules and regulations have been formed to reduce the number of accidents and to promote safety.
  • The President of the Nepal Mountaineering Association mentioned that the peaks and mountains in Nepal are unique and therefore it is better for the climbers to go ahead with guides to ensure their own safety.
  • Accidents are very common therewith avalanches, blizzards and other complications from the high altitude sickness.
  • This season witnessed a number of deaths including the death of 85-year-old Min Bahadur Sherchan, who tried to reclaim his title as the world’s oldest person to reach the top.

About Mount Everest

Mount Everest is Earth's highest mountain above sea level and it is located in the Mahalangur Himal sub-range of the Himalayas. In Nepali, it as known as Sagarmāthā and in Tibetan as Chomolungma. In 1865, Everest was given its official English name by the Royal Geographical Society, upon a recommendation by Andrew Waugh, the British Surveyor General of India. As there appeared to be several different local names, Waugh chose to name the mountain after his predecessor in the post, Sir George Everest.
