Arunachal Pradesh declared Open Defecation Free

Arunachal Pradesh became the second state in the North-East after Assam to become Open Defecation Free. The three remaining districts of Upper Subansiri, Siang Changlang were declared ODF.


What was the target?


  • The Arunachal Pradesh state government had set the target to achieve the ODF status by October 2, 2019, but it managed to achieve this status much ahead of its deadline on 31st December 2017.
  • This project was undertaken under the Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin) SBM (G). The Arunachal Pradesh state government extended an incentive of Rs 8,000 per toilet.
  • Swachh Arunachal Mission was also launched by the state government on 2nd October 2017 at Tawang to ensure sustainability of assets created under SBM (G).
  • This task has been achieved with the help and support from the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation.

Sikkim was the first state, Himachal Pradesh was second and Kerala at number three. Uttarakhand and Haryana declared 4th and 5th in the league.
