23rd April is celebrated all over the world as the World Book Day. It is also known as the World Book and Copyright Day or the International Day of the Book.

  • It is the most important event organized annually by the UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) in order to promote the reading, publishing and copyright among the public worldwide.
  • Generally, it is celebrated by the authors, illustrators, books and to encourage reading among common public.
  • It is the worldwide celebration of the books and readings and celebrated in more than 100 countries.

Background

World Book Day is for school children of all ages, with the primary aim of encouraging children to explore book and the joy of reading. The idea of celebrating books at the end of April originally came from booksellers in Catalonia, Spain, in 1923. The writer Vicente Clavel Andres wanted to honour fellow author Miguel de Cervantes who died on this date. It is also coincidentally the anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare. The first ever World Book Day in the world took place on the 23 April 1995 in the United Kingdom.

World Book Day 2018

  • This is the twentieth anniversary of World Book Day being recognised in the United Kingdom.
  • The theme for World Book Day 2018 is “Share a Story”.
  • Adults, parents and older siblings are encouraged to participate by reading and sharing stories. 
  • The organizers will be encouraging the nation to ‘Take 10’ and recognise the positive impact that reading together for only 10 minutes a day can have on a child.
  • In order to give parents and children ideas of what to read next, World Book Day have launched a nationwide poll to find the nation’s favourite #storiestoshare. 
  • In the UK and Ireland, National Book Tokens are sent out so that kids can find a book of their very own. They can take their book token to a local bookseller and can use it to pick one of TEN (exclusive, new and completely free) books. 

Significance of celebrating World Book Day

  • World Book Day is used to celebrate to make the people to get much of the knowledge for their own benefit as well as the development and welfare of the Country.
  • It encourages children for reading many of the Books by which they can generate lot positive attitude in them to develop and improve their society in a better way. 
  • It is used to make the kids know the National as well as International Conditions of the World.
  • It helps them to get much of the knowledge from the experienced people who wrote the books.
  • World Book Day is celebrated to provide the people to gather knowledge about many types of Books which makes them to get the specific knowledge about their requirements.
  • People with a better knowledge have lots of abilities to manage the tasks properly.
