Govt. launches Central Project Monitoring Unit for e-Vidhan project at Parliament

The Union Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs inaugurated the new office of Central Project Monitoring Unit for the e-Vidhan project of the Government.

  • This was done as a part of Swachhata Pakhwada being observed by the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs from 16th to 30thApril, 2018.
  • It was launched by the Union Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs, Statistics and Programme Implementation, Shri Vijay Goel.

What is e-Vidhan project?

  • e-Vidhan is a mission mode project to digitize and make the functioning of State Legislatures in India paperless.
  • It is a part of the broader Digital India Programme of the Government and is likely to contribute to the cleanliness & environment by reducing the use of papers to a great extent.
  • It will also make functioning of State Legislatures participative, responsive, transparent, productive and more accountable and efficient to public.
  • It will digitize and make all the Parliament documents, including debates, speeches, committee reports and questions, on the internet.
  • One of the major key component of the strategy devised for implementation is to create Project Monitoring Units both at Central as well as State levels.
  • The nodal agency for e-Vidhan mission is the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs. It is taking all the necessary steps for rolling out the projects in all the states.
  • The project e-Vidhan was started with an aim to make India’s all government office paperless.
  • This would save trees which in turn will ensure clean environment which is necessary for living healthy life.
  • The initiative will also help India on a par with developed nations such as UK and the US, which have advanced digital archives online.

Significance of e-Vidhan

  • Go Green - The project is in line with the ‘Go Green’ initiative of the Government which is the need of the hour. The environment-friendly initiative will make the process paperless and help in saving of trees.
  • Transparent functioning - The project will make the functioning of Parliament and State Legislature participative, responsive, transparent.
  • Efficient - The project will help in making the functioning more accountable to the public and the entire system more efficient.
  • Valuable resource - The availability of government database online can be effectively used by researchers, historians, activists.
