- The theme of Labour Day 2019 is 'Uniting Workers for Social and Economic Advancement'.
- Labour Day provides the Labours their right to work for only 8 hours a day.
Let us have a look at history:
- 1st May was chosen to be International Workers' Day to commemorate the 1886 Haymarket affair in Chicago.
- In that year beginning on 1st May, there was a general strike for the eight-hour workday.
- On 4th May, the police acted to disperse a public assembly in support of the strike when an unidentified person threw a bomb.
- Due to which several people and police officers died and more than 100 people were injured.
- In 1889, a meeting took place in Paris where it was decided to celebrate May Day on an annual basis through a proposal given by Raymond Lavigne.
May Day in India:
- The first celebration of the day in India was organised in Madras (now Chennai) by the Labour Kisan Party of Hindustan on May 1st, 1923.
- This was also the time when the Red Flag (the day's symbol used since its foundation) was first used in India.
