195 cases of NRI husbands Deserting their Wives: RPO

Current context: 195 cases of NRI husbands deserting their wives in the past 2 years is noted by the regional passport office (RPO)

• The Ministry of External affairs is very sensitive regarding the matter
• Cases include desertion, Divorces, domestic violence, dowry harassment etc.
• A large number of the cases were reported from Punjab
• The RPO handles complaints from the police, women commission, or other sources
• If there is any case of lookout notice, non-bail able warrant, court direction etc. against the husband the passport is cancelled
• Complaints filed by third parties are accepted
• The RPO sends show-cause notices to the husband when they receive complaints against them

Other cases before the RPO:

• Foreign nationals claiming to be Indian citizens- Mostly Nepalese, Bangladeshis and Myanmarese apply through the Aadhaar card, school certificate, birth certificate etc.
• Phishing websites masquerading as genuine websites claim up to Rs 5000 as application fee for ordinary passport whereas the actual fee is only Rs 1500
