Current context: Global/International Tiger Day is being celebrated on 29th July 2019 across the world.

  • The day is observed every year to create awareness about tiger protection and conservation of its natural habitat.
  • On this day, PM Modi will release the results of the 4th cycle of the All India Tiger Estimation.
  • All India Tiger Estimation is conducted by India every 4th year and is said to be the world’s largest wildlife survey effort in terms of intensity, coverage of sampling and camera trapping.
  • To mitigate the adverse impact of climate change, the National Tiger Conservation Authority along with the government have also carried out an economic valuation of tigers.
  • The government has launched Project Tiger in 1973 to conserve India's national animal.
  • India has marked the distinction of having the maximum number of tigers in the world with these preventive efforts.
  • Tiger is listed as one of the world’s iconic species and considered as an “umbrella species” because its conservation also conserves many other species.
