Automated Facial Recognition System (AFRS):
- AFRS a national database of photos and videos of people’s faces is a component of the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and System (CCTNS)
- NCRB will use CCTV footage, newspaper photos, sketches etc. to identify missing people, criminals, and dead bodies
- “Neural networks”, an artificial intelligence technology is used by AFRS for pattern-finding and matching of faces
- At present, the police have fingerprints and iris scans verification facility. AFRS will provide more accurate matching results and easier solution especially for identification amongst crowds
Uses of AFRS:
- Earlier, Ministry of civil aviation has used facial recognition for airport entry “DigiYatra” on a trial basis at Hyderabad airport
- In August 2018, Telangana police launched their own system of facial recognition
