Current context: The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) has proposed to use an Automated Facial Recognition System (AFRS) across the country

Automated Facial Recognition System (AFRS):

  • AFRS a national database of photos and videos of people’s faces is a component of the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and System (CCTNS)
  • NCRB will use CCTV footage, newspaper photos, sketches etc. to identify missing people, criminals, and dead bodies
  • Neural networks”, an artificial intelligence technology is used by AFRS for pattern-finding and matching of faces
  • At present, the police have fingerprints and iris scans verification facility. AFRS will provide more accurate matching results and easier solution especially for identification amongst crowds 

Uses of AFRS:

  • Earlier, Ministry of civil aviation has used facial recognition for airport entry “DigiYatra” on a trial basis at Hyderabad airport
  • In August 2018, Telangana police launched their own system of facial recognition
