Current context: Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan, inaugurated the 72nd Session of the WHO Regional Committee for South-East Asia on 2nd September 2019.
72nd Session of the WHO Regional Committee for South-East Asia 
  • The committee works for discussing experts opinions to deliberate on public health issues and achieve the elimination of diseases faced by the countries in the South-East region.
  • The Regional Committee is the highest decision making and governing body of the WHO in the South-East region.
  • Dr Harsh Vardhan was also unanimously elected as Chairman of the 72nd Session
  • India is hosting the Regional Committee for the 2nd time.
  • South-East Asia Region constitutes about one-fourth of the global population, and has set its priorities to eliminate measles, rubella control, NCD prevention, Reduce MMR, fight against antimicrobial resistance etc.
  • The South-East region eradicated polio in 2014 and comes second to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus. Nepal has eliminated trachoma. Bhutan, Nepal, Bangladesh and Thailand have controlled Hepatitis B.
