Current context: The IPCC Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) meeting of Working Group III Sixth Assessment Report has begun from 30th September 2019 in New Delhi.

  • The Working Group III meeting will produce a report that will emphasize what can be done in the near term to mitigate climate change and strategies for its implementation.
  • India is hosting the Second Lead Author Meeting and the meeting will continue till 4th October 2019.
  • IPCC is the UN body and assesses the science behind climate change.
  • The IPCC was established in 1988 by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).
  • It provides the scientific assessments concerning climate change, its implications and risks, and suggests migration strategies.
  • There are 195 members in IPCC and it comprises 3 working groups:
    1. Working Group I, dealing with the physical science basis of climate change
    2. Working Group II, dealing with impacts, adaptation and vulnerability
    3. Working Group III, dealing with the mitigation of climate change
