Current context: The 20th edition of the Hornbill Festival has begun at Naga Heritage Kisama in Nagaland.

  • This is an annual festival and is being organised by the Nagaland Government to showcase the state’s traditional and rich cultural heritage.
  • The Hornbill Festival is a 10 Day festival (celebration held every year from 1 to 10 December) that began with the traditional blessing pronounced by Mongtei of Aniashu village by beating the traditional gong.
  • Nagaland Governor R N Ravi was the chief host of the festival, while Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio was the host.
  • The theme of this year festival is “Colours of Nagaland”.
  • Cultural performance of different tribes of Nagaland, art exhibition, photo-fest, city tour, night carnival etc. are the highlights of the Hornbill Festival.
  • The first festival was held in 2000 and is named after the Indian hornbill, a forest bird.
