Current context: India will host the 36th International Geological Congress (IGC) in March 2020.
36th International Geological Congress 

  • The theme of the conference is ‘Geosciences: The Basic Science for a Sustainable Development’.
  • International Geological Congress (IGC) is described as the Olympics of Geosciences, which is a global geoscientific event held once in four years.
  • The 36th IGC includes an exhaustive Science program, a range of field excursions, a state-of-the-art geo exposition, etc.
  • With this event, India will become the only Asian country to host the event twice.
  • India had hosted it for the first time in 1964, which was the 22nd IGC.
  • The event is being funded by the Ministry of Mines and Ministry of Earth Sciences with the support of the Indian National Science Academy (INSA) and the national Science Academies of Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal and Sri Lanka.
  • Geological Survey of India is the nodal agency for organizing the event.
