Current context: Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi chaired the first meeting of the National Ganga Council in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh on 14th Dec 19.

  • The first meeting was aimed at reinforcing the importance of a ‘Ganga-centric’ approach in all departments of the concerned states as well as relevant Central Ministries.
  • The National Ganga Council supervises the pollution prevention and rejuvenation of River Ganga Basin, including Ganga and its tributaries.
  • The council was constituted in 2016 to oversee the cleaning of the Ganga and is supposed to meet at least once a year.
  • For the first time, the Central Government had made commitment of Rs. 20,000 crores for the period 2015-20 to the five states (Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal) through which Ganga passes.
  • PM Modi also took a boat ride from Atal Ghat to Sisamau drain outfall point.
  • The Sisamau drain was one of Asia largest drains that emptied nearly 140 million litres of untreated sewage into the Ganga.
