Good Governance Index

Current context: The Good Governance Index is launched by the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions in New Delhi on 25th Dec 19.
Good Governance Index 
  • The Good Governance Index (GGI) has been launched on the occasion of Good Governance Day, which is observed on the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
  • The States and UTs are divided into three groups:
    1. Big States: Tamil Nadu topped the list followed by Maharashtra, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh
    2. North-East and Hill States: Himachal Pradesh was ranked first, followed by Uttarakhand, Tripura, Mizoram and Sikkim.
    3. Union Territories: The list is topped by Puducherry followed by Chandigarh and Delhi
  • The ranking was launched by the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances, Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions.
  • The GGI is a uniform citizen-centric tool to assess the Status of Governance and impact of various interventions taken up by the State Government and UTs.
  • The objectives of GGI are to provide:
    1. Quantifiable data to compare the state of governance in all states and UTs.
    2. Enable states and UTs to formulate and implement suitable strategies for improving governance.
    3. Shift to result-oriented approaches and administration.
  • The GGI takes into consideration 10 sectors and measures the sectors on total 50 indicators. The sectors include Citizen-Centric Governance, Agriculture and Allied Sectors, Environment, Public Health, Judicial & Public Security, Commerce & Industries, Social Welfare & Development, Human Resource Development, Economic Governance and Public Infrastructure & Utilities.
