Current context: The National Consumer Day was observed across the country on 24th December 19.
National Consumer Day 
  • The day is observed to highlight the importance of the consumer movement and to make every consumer more aware of their rights and responsibilities.
  • On this day, the Consumer Protection Act, 1986 received the then President's approval and was enacted thereafter.
  • The Act aims to safeguard consumers from any type of exploitation against deficiency in services, defective goods and unfair trade practices.
  • The theme of this year is “alternate consumer grievance/dispute redressal”.
  • The Consumer Protection Act, 2019 received the President’s assent that entails setting up of a Central Consumer Protection Authority, CCPA to promote, protect and enforce the rights of consumers.
  • The new Act has replaced the old Consumer Protection Act, 1986.
