Current context: The National Mathematics Day is celebrated on 22nd December every year in India to commemorate the birth anniversary of Indian Mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan.
National Mathematics Day 
  • The former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on 26th Feb 2012 announced to observe the day as the National Mathematics Day to mark the 125th anniversary of the birth of Indian Mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan.
  • He also announced that 2012 would be celebrated as the National Mathematics Year.
  • The objective behind observing this day is to raise awareness among people about the importance of mathematics for the development of humanity.
  • Ramanujan was born in 1887 in Erode, Tamil Nadu and discovered around 3,900 results of mathematics during his short lifespan of 32 years.
  • Some of his major discoveries include Ramanujan prime, Ramanujan theta function, number theory, partition formula, infinite series and mock theta functions.
  • ‘The Man Who Knew Infinity’ (2015) was a biopic made on the mathematician with the starrer Dev Patel.
