Current context: The annual Sahitya Akademi Awards in 23 languages was announced by the Sahitya Akademi on 18th Dec 19.

- The Awards were recommended by distinguished Jury members representing 23 Indian languages and was approved by Dr Chandrashekhar Kambar, Chairman of the Executive Board of the Sahitya Akademi (also the President of Sahitya Akademi).
- The award is given several categories and the recipients include:
- Poetry: Sri Kumar Manish Arvind (Maithili), Sri V. Madhusoodanan Nair (Malayalam), Dr Phukan Ch. Basumatary (Bodo), Smt. Anuradha Patil (Marathi), Prof. Penna Madhusudan(Sanskrit), Dr Nand Kishore Acharya (Hindi) and Sri Nilba A. Khandekar (Konkani).
- Novel: Sri Bandi Narayana Swamy (Telugu), Sri L. Birmangol Singh (Beryl Thanga) (Manipuri), Sri Cho. Dharman (Tamil) and Dr JoysreeGoswami Mahanta (Assamese).
- Short Stories: Sri Abdul Ahad Hajini (Kashmiri), Sri Tarun Kanti Mishra(Odia), Sri Kirpal Kazak (Punjabi), Sri Ram Swaroop Kisan (Rajasthani), Sri Kali Charan Hembram(Santali) and Sri Ishwar Moorjani (Sindhi).
- Essays: Dr Chinmoy Guha(Bengali), Sri Om Sharma Jandriari (Dogri) and Sri Ratilal Borisagar (Gujarati).
- Non-fiction: Dr Shashi Tharoor (English) for his book ‘An Era of Darkness’.
- Autobiography: Dr Vijaya(Kannada).
- Biography: Prof. Shafey Kidwai (Urdu).
- The Awards were given to books first published during the five years immediately preceding the year of Award (i.e. between 1 January 2013 and 31 December 2017).
- The award includes an engraved copper-plaque, a shawl and an amount of Rs. 1 lakh and will be on 25th February 2020 at New Delhi during the Festival of Letters.
