- The day is observed to commemorate India’s victory over Pakistan in 1971 war.
- On 16th Dec 1971, General AA Khan Niazi, the chief of the Pakistani forces, had surrendered unconditionally to the allied forces consisting of Indian Army and Mukti Bahini.
- The war also resulted into the subsequent secession of East Pakistan into Bangladesh.
- To mark the day, a wreath laying ceremony will be held at ‘Vijay Smarak’ at Fort William that is the Head Quarters of Eastern Command, which was at forefront of the war.
- The decision to go for war with Pakistan was laid on 3rd Dec 1971, to save Bengali Muslims and Hindus of ‘East Pakistan’.
