Current context: The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) displayed Anti-Satellite (A-SAT) Weapon System at Rajpath in the Republic Day parade on 26th January 2020.
DRDO Anti-Satellite (A-SAT) Weapon System
  • DRDO launched ‘Mission Shakti’, India’s first anti-satellite technology A-SAT mission in March 2019 from the Dr AP J Abdul Kalam Island in Odisha.
  • The system destroyed a live orbiting satellite in the Low Earth Orbit (LEO) in a "Hit to Kill" mode with 10-centimetre accuracy.
  • The first time developed covert technology of ‘hit to kill’, enables to destroy an enemy satellite by directly colliding with it with pin-point accuracy.
  • It can destroy a missile approaching it at a high speed of nearly 11 km per second.
  • The technology placed India at par with the club of three nations- US, Russia and China, which possess this capability.
