Current context: Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation (KMRC) said that India's first underwater metro train service is expected to be completed by March 2022.
India's First Underwater Metro 
  • The underground Metro Project is known as the East-West Metro project, which is being constructed below the Hoogly River.
  • The underwater metro twin tunnel will connect Howrah and Mahakaran Stations.
  • The East-West Metro corridor builds under the Government of India entity Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation (KMRC) will have 6 elevated stations and six underground stations.
  • The length of the river crossing is 520 metres and the internal diameter of each tunnel is 5.55 metres.
  • The total estimated cost of the Kolkata East-West Metro Corridor Project is Rs 8,996.96 crore.
  • About 48.5% of the fund is provided through a soft loan of Rs 41.6 billion from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
  • KMRC will repay the JICA loan over 30 years after an initial six-year moratorium.
  • The East-West Metro project is 74% owned by India’s Railway Ministry and 26% by Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.
