Mission Purvodaya

Current context: Union Steel Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has unveiled the Mission Purvodaya on 12th Jan 2020 in Kolkata, to develop the eastern region into an integrated steel hub.
Mission Purvodaya 
  • The Mission Purvodaya is aimed at accelerated development of eastern India through the establishment of an integrated steel hub.
  • As per the government’s data, the eastern belt has the potential to add over 75 % of the country’s incremental steel capacity envisioned by the National Steel Policy.
  • The government with this initiative aims to transform logistics and utility infrastructure which would change the socio-economic landscape in eastern India.
  • The government will enhance capacity through:
    1. Easing the setup of greenfield steel plants.
    2. Develop steel clusters near integrated steel plants as well as demand centres.
  • The eastern states of India (Odisha, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal) and Northern part of Andhra Pradesh collectively hold 80 per cent of the country's iron ore, 100 per cent of coking coal.
