Current context: The Union Cabinet approved the constitution of the Twenty-second Law Commission of India on 19th February 2020.
- The 22nd Law Commission will function for a period of three years from its date of official constitution.
- Law Commission of India is a non-statutory body constituted by the Government from time to time.
- The panel will consist of:
- A full-time chairperson
- Four full-time members (including a member secretary)
- Secretaries of the law and legislative departments
- Ex-officio members
- Not more than five part-time Members
- The tenure of the twenty-first Law Commission ended in August 2018.
- The 21st Law Commission of India under Justice (Retd.) BS Chauhan was established in 2015
- The 1st Law Commission of India was constituted in 1955.
- The commission is tasked to perform functions on:
- To give recommendations on different aspects of law which are entrusted to it.
- Identify laws which are no longer needed or relevant
- It shall also undertake studies and research for bringing reforms in the justice delivery systems
