Current context: Sri Lankan Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa confirmed that his government has decided to withdraw from the co-sponsorship of the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC)

  • The UNHRC resolution 30/1 calls for addressing war crimes and reconciliation efforts with minorities.
  • The statement came after the U.S. imposed travel restrictions on Army chief Lt. Gen. Shavendra Silva and his immediate family members.
  • The decision taken has to be ratified by cabinet and parliament.
  • The resolution 30/1 was adopted by the Human Rights Council in Geneva on the 1st of October 2015.
  • Human Rights Council resolution 30/1, which was led by the US was co-sponsored by Sri Lanka along with the UK, Macedonia and Montenegro.
