M. Ajit Kumar Appointed as Chairman of CBIC

Current context: The Central government said that the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has cleared the appointment of M. Ajit Kumar as the chairman of Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) on 30th January 2020.
M. Ajit Kumar Appointed as Chairman of CBIC
  • Muttoli Ajit Kumar, a 1984 batch IRS officer, is currently serving as Principal Chief Commissioner of GST and Central Excise.
  • The ACC has approved his appointment two days before the Union Finance Minister would announce the Union Budget 2020, on February 1.
  • M Ajit Kumar has completed M Sc in Law and Finance from the University of Oxford.
  • He has also completed MA, LLB from Delhi University and a Programme on Corporate Taxation and Advocacy from the Duke University.
  • The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) is the nodal national agency responsible for administering Customs, GST, Central Excise, Service, Tax & Narcotics in India.
  • The CBIC is a part of the Department of Revenue under the Ministry of Finance, is one of the oldest government departments of India as was established in the year 1855 by the then British Governor-General of India, to administer customs laws in India and collection of import duties/land revenue.
