Current context: The World Radio Day is being observed on 13th Feb 2020.

  • The day is observed every year on 13th Feb to raise greater awareness among the public and the media of the importance of radio and to encourage decision makers to establish and provide access to information through radio.
  • The theme of the World Radio Day 2020 is “Radio and Diversity”.
  • This edition of WRD is divided into three main sub-themes:
    1. Advocating for pluralism in radio, including a mix of public, private and community broadcasters.
    2. Encouraging representation in the newsroom, with teams comprised of diverse social groups.
    3. Promoting a diversity of editorial content and programme types reflecting the variety of the audiences.
  • The Director-General of UNESCO proposed to establish United Nations Radio in 1946 on 13th February.
  • The United Nations General Assembly formally endorsed UNESCO’s proclamation of World Radio Day on 14th January 2013.
  • The UN General Assembly during its 67th session adopted a resolution proclaiming 13th of February as World Radio Day.
  • Prasar Bharati as the public service broadcaster of India with the responsibility to sustain and develop radio as a medium of public broadcasting.
  • All India Radio (AIR), officially known since 1956 as Akashvani ("Voice from the Sky"), is the national public radio broadcaster of India and is a division of Prasar Bharati.
