Current context: The World Unani Day is being observed on 11th Feb 2020.
World Unani Day 
  • The day is celebrated every year to mark the birth anniversary of great Unani scholar and social reformer Hakim Ajmal Khan.
  • Hakim Ajmal Khan was an eminent Indian Unani physician who was a versatile genius, a social reformer, a noted freedom fighter and a Unani medical educationist.
  • He was the founder of scientific research in Unani System of Medicine and was one of the founders of the Jamia Millia Islamia in New Delhi.
  • The main objective of World Unani Day is to spread awareness about health care delivery through Unani system of medicine through its preventive and curative philosophy.
  • A function is being organised by the AYUSH Ministry in New Delhi on the day and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will be its Chief Guest.
  • The Unani system of medicine was originated in Greece and its foundation was laid by Hippocrates.
  • The Unani system of medicine was introduced in India by the Arabs and Persians in around the eleventh century.
  • India has the largest number of Unani educational, research and health care institutions in the world.
