Current Context: The UN 'Economic and Social Survey of Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) 2020 has forecasted India's GDP growth to slow down to 4.8%.

  • It has marked the slowdown is due to the COVID-19 pandemic which has lead to the stopping of positive economic impactful activities.
  • The title of the UN report is ‘Economic and Social Survey of Asia and Pacific (ESCAP) 2020: Towards Sustainable Economies.’
  • As per the report, India's GDP growth for the fiscal year 2019-2020 was estimated at 5% and is forecast to slow down to 4.8% for the current fiscal 2020-21. Economic growth for the country could stand at 5.1 % for fiscal year 2021-22.
  • Preliminary estimates by ESCAP suggest that the Asia-Pacific region's GDP could experience declines of 0.6-0.8 % as a direct result of the COVID-19 pandemic through trade links alone.
