Current Context: Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) released a report titled "Trends in World Military Expenditure, 2019".
- The report is a detail analysis of spending in military sector by the countries in the year 2019.
- As per the report the global military spending in 2019 was 2.2% of the global GDP that is 7.2% higher in 2019 as compared with the year 2010.
- The report stated that the total global military expenditure rose to $1,917 billion in 2019, which is an increase of 3.6% from 2018 and the largest annual growth in spending since 2010.
- Highlights for India: The military spending of India grew by 6.8% to $71.1 billion in 2019. India spent $71.1 billion on defence in 2019 which is 2.4% of its GDP and has thus raised to 3rd position in 2019 from 4th position in 2018. India has become the third-largest military spender in the world, after the US and China.
