Current Context: India has released its first-ever climate national report on the climate crisis.
- The report is titled ‘Assessment of climate change over the Indian region’.
- The report is prepared by Ministry of Earth Science (MoES) and it is edited by a scientist at Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Pune.
- As per the report, the average temperature of India has raised by 0.7 degree Celsius in 1901-2018. This has resulted due to the emission of greenhouse gases and it is projected to rise by 2.7 degree Celsius by 2099 in case of if essential care is taken on climate change and in the worst case it will rise to 4.4 degree Celsius.
- The monsoon in Northern India has reduced by 6% between 1951-2015 because of polluting aerosol ‘brown cloud’.
- As compared to the April-June heatwaves between 1976-2005, they are to become four times more by 2099.
- Also, the sea level near Mumbai is rising at a rate of 3 cm per decade and on the Bengal coast, it is 5 cm per decade.
