Acquisition of Raven and Spike Firefly by Indian Army

Current Context: Indian Army is set to increase its weapon and ammunition inventory by acquiring unmanned aerial vehicle ‘Raven’ from the United States and a variant of Rafael ‘Spike Firefly’ from Israel.

  • Thus, the ‘Raven’ and ‘Spike Fly’ are soon to become part of the Indian army’s weapon inventory.
  • Raven is handy launching remotely controllable unmanned vehicle whereas Spike Firefly is state-of-the-art ammunition device. Both the weapons will add lethality to the Indian Army’s inventory.
  • The Indian Army will be acquiring 200 quantities of RQ-11 UAV. RQ-11 UAV can fly up to 10 km at an altitude of 500 feet and can speed up to 95km/hour. It will help the infantry troops to conduct reconnaissance of the battle theatre ahead and the enemy troops placement. Whereas the Spike Firefly will be able to deliver a precision strike on enemy troops hiding within a range of 1 km.
  • The first slot of acquisition will include purchasing of 4-6 jets by the end of July 2020.
  • Also, the Indian Air Force is set to purchase Rafael multi-role fighter jets from Paris by the end of July 2020.
